1924-2002
When young Peter Henry Ashworth won an Apprentice Handicap at
Salisbury on Friday, 9 May 1941, he was riding in public for only the second time.The winning horse, Blue White, started at 20/1 and was trained by Epsom-based Harold George Wallington.
Peter, who lived by the stables at The Gables, 12, Ladbroke Road, Epsom, volunteered the next year, and served with the Black Watch in Italy.
Peter continued to ride after the war, taking his last mount in 1954.
He rode in Belgium and Italy.
He turned to training in 1955. He trained the excellent Lady Senator and, early on in his career, won the 1961 Irish 1,000 Guineas and the 1962 Brown Jack Stakes.
He quit training in 1984.
Peter was born on April 26, 1924 and married Janet Packham on November 26, 1955. They had a daughter, Sharon.
He died in December 2002, aged 78.
