Nicholas Gordon Richards was born in Northumberland on February 25, 1956.Standing 5ft 10ins, he was the son of trainer Gordon W. Richards (1930-1998).
Aged 15, he scored first time out on the Flat (Unruffled at Teeside Park, April 3, 1971) and also on his debut over hurdles. He then won on his first try over fences.
Nicky's biggest win was on The Spaniard in the 1973 Fred Withington Chase.
He had to retire after a bad fall in 1974.
Nicky took over his father's stable after his death.
