Edward Shaw arrived at Newmarket in 1910.
He was a native of Wellington, New Zealand, and could ride at 7st 10lb. He had been the leading jockey in in South Africa on three occasions.
Edward had ridden for the best owners, winning the Johannesburg Christmas Handicap for the Hon. Frank White on Baluarte which was later shipped to Escott's stable in Lewes, England.
Edward was given letters of introduction to trainers Blackwell and Halsey by Sir John Miller, who thoroughly recommended the jockey.
