Ray's day in the sun came at Sandown on Saturday March 14, 1959, (left) when, aboard Langton Heath, he won the Imperial Cup at 100/6. Riding with polish and great confidence, the 7 lb claimer caught the long-distance hurdler Mariner's Dance at the distance with a strong run on the flat.
Ray was born on August 28, 1936, and lived at 77, New North Road, South Park, Reigate, Surrey.
He was retained by T. R. Griffiths, who sent out horses from his Mayfields Stables in Kingswood, Surrey,Â
Ray rode his first winner on Kumasi King at Kempton on 28 December, 1957. (left)
Ray served his apprenticeship with J. O'Donoghue from 1952 to 1957.
