2001 18th January - Grantown Bonspiel
46 rinks (186 curlers) gathered from miles around to compete for the Moy Hall Trophy on the ice on the pond opposite the Craiglynne Hotel, Grantown-on-Spey. The local organisers, Strathspey Curling Club under the leadership of Donly MacLeod, had worked tirelessly to clear the ice of snow and mark out the rinks.
A shotgun at 11am signalled the start of games, with a further shot later to stop for lunch. At the end of the day's play, scores from North rinks were set against those from the South, and North declared the winners! The Moy Hall trophy was then awarded to the highest up rink on the winning side, and this was the Nairn rink of Martin Macdonald, George Pirie and Mike McInnes, skipped by Jimmy Asher.
Nairn had previously won the trophy in 1966, when Jimmy Asher had played third for Eric Brown.

The MOY HALL TROPHY was gifted by the Mackintosh of Mackintosh, Moy, in 1892. The newspaper cutting of 1897 is the earliest report of competition. The Bonspiel was held at Moy conditions permitting, until 1933 when Strathspey CC took over running the event. The Grantown venue is now part of the Cairngorm National Park, and cutting of the rushes to allow smooth ice when frozen is not allowed so as to protect insect life.
