The Nairnshire Telegraph carried an obituary to William Drysdale Penny. This shows that he registered the first Nairn Curling Club with the RCCC only two years after his arrival in Nairn from Haddington via Glenshee. He had a keen interest in the administration of local organisations, including the Nairnshire Farming Society, the local Building Society and the Meteorological Service. The obituary records that "His demise on Wednesday caused a great shock to the community, of which he had long been a prominent and popular member." and that "he was always willing to undertake those friendly and neighbourly offices which form so important an element in the social life of a rural district".

This is one of the first reports of an inter-club match held between the mother club, Dyke, and its progeny, Auldearn.

It is interesting to note that one of the Auldearn skips was Mr A. Macrae of Firhall, Nairn.

Auldearn also played Forres.

28th December 1886

District Medal Match - reported in The Annual. The new Auldearn Club were narrowly beaten by Dyke. Note a typographical error suggests the match lasted only 30 minutes!
