Nairn Ahead At Bonspiel For County Championship
Nairn Club gained the Glenferness Challenge Cup to become Nairn County champions when Nairnshire Curling Association held the annual bonspiel at the Nairn rinks on Wednesday in ideal weather.
The six Nairn rinks averaged 5.8 shots up, while Glenferness became runners-up, their two rinks averaging 0.5 down.
Next came Ardclach (1955 holders) 7 shots down , and Cawdor 10 shots down.
Twelve rinks took part, and the skips in the winning Nairn Club rinks were—T. Walls, D. R. Macdonald, P. M. Pottie, D. Brown, J. McFadyen, and J. C. Michie.
A new award was the presentation by P. M. Pottie of badges to the rinks in the winning club returning the biggest victory of the day and these went to D. Ross, W. Williams, G. A. Whyte and, J. C. Michie (skip).
Mr George Innes, the Association hon. secretary, announced the results and called upon Mr Pottie, vice-president, in the absence of the President (Lord, Cawdor), to hand over the prizes. Mr Pottie said jt was a great pleasure to do so as one who had taken part in every championship bonspiel in the last 28 years.
He welcomed the appearance of the country clubs and while Nairn had won the main trophy they were on their "home ground". Personally, he hoped that in another year the bonspiel would again be held on one of the country ponds. They would all agree that in the bonspiel that day they had very good ice and the thanks of all the competitors were due to Mr F. J. Knowles in that respect.
Dr. Macdonald accepted the cup on behalf of the Nairn Club and paid tribute to the work done by Mr Innes, their secretary, over the years, so efficiently and pleasantly.
