Ardclach Regain Title After 26 Years Of Trying
Ardclach, by a good margin, emerged winners of Nairn county championship at a bonspiel held at Nairn pond on Jan. 17.
This was Ardclach's first success in the rivalry for the Leven and Melville Cup, which goes with the title, since 1928-29. The cup was played for first in 1906.
Twelve rinks' took part—two each from Ardclach, Cawdor and Glenferness and six rinks from Nairn and owing to there being no suitable conditions, the bonspiel had not been held since season 1951-52. Heavy showers of snow hampered play, but it was none-the-less keen and Ardclach's winning score worked out at an average of four shots up per rink; Cawdor came close with an average of 2.5 shots up; and Nairn, the holders, were third with minus l/8th shot average..
The members of the winning Ardclach rinks were: No. 1 — J. Philip, D. Stewart, H. McArthur, J. Mitchell (skip); No. 2—P. Smart, sen., E. James, A. S. Innes, and D. A. Macarthur (skip).
The Hon. Secretary (Mr G. Innes), who made excellent arrangements, called on Dr D. R. Macdonald, President of the Nairn Club, to introduce Earl Cawdor, the Association President, who handed over the cup to the winners, Mr McArthur accepting for Ardclach.
Dr Macdonald spoke of Lord Cawdor's great interest in curling, and he congratulated Ardclach, saying it was nice to see a country club winning the cup; he was sure they would put up a big fight to keep it next year.
Mr McArthur said, he did not know when Ardclach won the cup last but in his memory they had always tried hard enough. It was on the cards that Cawdor or Glenferness would win it next year and he hoped the honours would go round.
Mr James Mitchell returned a vote of thanks to Earl Cawdor and paid particular tribute to his great interest in the Ardclach Club. He also thanked the Nairn Club for the hospitable manner in which they had acted as hosts.

The Membership totalled 85 and the Balance Sheet was reasonably healthy, but there was still an unknown outstanding liability due to J F Wilson (Electrician). It was agreed to request Mr Wilson to attend a Management Committee meeting to try to resolve the issue.
Office Bearers were elected. President: Dr Douglas R Macdonald; Vice-president: David Brown; Chaplain: Rev Alex Gemmel; Ice-masters: Dr J MacFadyen and D Hamish Mackenzie; Ice Man: Fred Knowles; Hon Secretary & Treasurer: George G Calder.
It was agreed that in view of his long service to the Club, Percy Knight would be invited to future Annual Dinners free of charge. Club badges were to be got, to be worn in balmorals at all matches. Ardclach had intimated that they proposed to run a Curlers' Ball this season.
11th Nov 1955 - Management Committee
JF Wilson's account (Jan 1947 to Nov 1954) received amounting to £119-9/7, along with a covering letter stating that part of the account had been submitted to the late secretary on ar least two occasions, but that he had been requested to withold it due to the club having insufficient funds. Payment was to be sent with a letter to Mr Wilson appreciating all the work he had done for the club free of charge.
As a result of old brooms causing some trouble on the ice, a notice is to be put up in the clubhouse to the effect that faulty brooms would be destroyed. The Annual Dinner was fixed for 10th February 1956 in the Royal Hotel to which WG Piper, John Foster and Jack Bookless would be invited.
2nd Dec 1955 - Management Committee
The Royal Hotel had stated the dinner would be 10/6 for three courses, with no choice. The club would not be permitted to bring in their own drink. Whisky could be bought at 55/- a bottle, and Sherry at 36/- per bottle. It was agreed that these costs “put the holding of a dinner out of the question” and accordingly it was recommended that the holding of a dinner be dropped this year.
It was reported that some of the country clubs were finding it difficult to keep going – some not having had curling for three or four years. It was agreed to invite them as guests to play up to 2 to 3 times a year on the Nairn ponds.
The polishing of the stones this year, by John Fyffe Ltd., Aberdeen was not considered satisfactory.
