CAWDORS COUNTY CUP TRIUMPH AFTER 53 YEARS
Cawdor Club won Nairnshire County Curling Association’s premier award for the first time in 53 years when, at the Nairn rink on Wednesday, they secured the Leven Cup by finishing with the highest average number of eight shots up.
The two Cawdor rinks deserved the congratulations of all curlers on this signal success for it was a popular victory.
Members of the Cawdor rinks were :- No.1: W.J. Brown, A. Wood, J. Innes and J.R.L. Craigie (skip), No.2: – A. Morrison, S. Urquart, H.S. Robertson and S. Hay (skip).
Runners up were Ardclach, holders of the trophy the previous two years, who finished with an average of 51/2 shots up.
Nairn had six rinks forward, Glenferness, two,Ardclach two and Cawdor two.The ice conditions were none too good because of a fresh which set in during the morning and by night there was about half an inch of water on the rinks; nevertheless competition was keen and all enjoyed the day with excellent arrangements made by the committee with Mr G. Innes, hon. secretary, and Mr F. J. Knowles in charge of the ponds.
The President’s brooches for the rink with the highest number of shots up over an opponent went to members of Cawdor No.1
The President (Lord Leven), who had been taking part for Glenferness earlier in the day, was unable to be present at the finish and Mr D. A. MacArthur (Ardclach), vice president of the Association, handed over the awards, congratulating Cawdor on their triumph.

F. LAMONT WINS KETTLE
Nairn Club’s points competition was concluded on Wednesday night when Finlay Lamont won the kettle with 21 points. Runners up being E. Brown and A Hay with 19 points.

INITIATES ARE INSTALLED
Mr W. G, Piper, president of the Royal Caledonian Club, was guest of honour among many guests from other clubs, including Avoch, Caber Feidh (Ross-shire), Highland, Monifeith, Ardclach, Cawdor, and Glenferness, when a large company spent a most enjoyable night at the Nairn Club dinner and curlers' court in the Royal Hotel on Friday. Also noted were the Rev. Alex, Gemmell, the former Club chaplain, Mr D. Brown and Rev. M. W. Hodgson, the Club’s new chaplain. Dr J. Macfadyen, president, welcomed the company, referring particularly to the pleasure it gave to have the Royal C.C.C. president with them for the second time in recent years.
The toast "Jack Frost" was given by Mr. E. Grieve, and the Chairman proposed the “Royal Caledonian Curling Club," to which Mr Piper replied. “Neighbouring Clubs” was given by Mr Fred. J. Knowles and Mr Jas. Laurie (Highland) replied. Mr D. K. Philip proposed " Wives and Sweethearts" and Mr F. Lamont replied. " The Chairman" was toasted on the call of Mr Douglas Stewart.
Dr Macfadyen, assisted by Mr T. Walls, Mr E. F. Brown and Mr Robert Taylor (Easter Golford), then installed the following initiiates: Mr Hodgson, Col. D. H. W. Brown Messrs M. Marshall, A. Miller, John More, Jas. McDonald, D. H. Mackay, W. J. M. Stevenson, J. Urquhart, J. Mackintosh, M. McPherson and A. Robertson.
During an interval opportunity was taken to present to Mr G. G. Calder, in recognition of his long years of service to the club as honorary secretary and treasurer, an electric kettle and toaster. Dr Macfadyen voiced the members' appreciation of his work and Mr Calder suitab1y replied.
The entertainment part of programme, was greatly enjoyed and the company were happy, in having with them Mr Percy C. Knight, Elgin, who had not missed a Curling Club function since 1927. Once again he delighted everyone with a vocal solo. Also contributing to the programme were Mr A. Tulloch (violin) and Mr Jas. MacMorran who rendered indispensable service at the piano. Mr H McCallum was piper.A very fine dinner was provided by the Hotel management.
ARDCLACH POINTS WIN
The competition for Ardclach Club points award was held recently for the first time since 1949 and 10 players were forward D. A. Macarthur (holder) retained the title with 24 points; next came H. MacArthur 18 points and H. M Mackenzie 15 points.
10th April 1961. - Annual General Meeting
In addition to the report carried in the Nairnshire Telegraph, it was noted that the Club's accounts showed a balance of £167:17/4. Peter Pottie intimated his resignation as a skip as he is re-forming the Dalcross club, but he will remain an occasional member of Nairn. Mr Miller of the Nairn Quarry Company was thanked for his donation of materials for repairs to the ponds.

ENTERPRISING CLUB HAS NEW PRESIDENT FOR '61-62
Mr Robert Taylor, Golford, was elected new president; a membership of 109 was reported and a satisfactory balance sheet was submitted when Nairn Curling Club annual general meeting was held in the Royal Hotel on April 10th.
Dr J. Macfadyen, the retiring president, presided at the outset, and he referred to the successful season; to matches played with other clubs; to the enjoyable dinner and court, and to the outstanding day outing to Aberdeen rink in connection with which he paid tribute to Mr E. F. Brown, who had arranged it.
He expressed thanks to the members for the support given to him during the season.

LIVELY
The meeting was a lively one with twelve nominations for eight management committee vacancies and seven nominees for four vacancies as reserve skips, the election being by ballot, with Messrs D. A. Macarthur and D.Stewart as tellers.
Mr Brown, the vice-president, presided later in the absence of the President, and he thanked the retiring President for the enthusiasm, energy and drive he had shown during his term of office; he also acknowledged the Club's indebtedness to the office-bearers, to Mr Knowles who provided the ice under all conditions, and to others who had assisted, all of whom had helped towards the happy and successful season.
Special reference was made to the resignation as skip of Mr Peter M. Pottie, who had done so much for the Club and for curling- in general during his long association with the club; the members were glad to learn that he would continue as an occasional member.
THANKS
The thanks of the Club were also expressed to Mr G. G. Calder, whose work for many years as hon. secretary and treasurer, had been deeply appreciated; he would be retiring to live in Inverness next Month but the Club were pleased that he too would continue in membership.
The Club membership was given as 4 hon members; 96 ordinary and 9 occasional members.
After the meeting, those present enjoyed a film on " Curling in Canada."
25th September 1961 - General Meeting
It was arranged to send two rinks to the Highland Bonspiel at Perth on 1st November. There would be an outing to Donald's Ice Rink, Aberdeen on the 19th November and an outing to Dundee on the 24th October. Two rinks were entered for the next Grand Match, and Highland had been drawn in a District Medal. It was agreed to play this match with four rinks, two at home and two away.
Repairs to the ponds had cost an estimated £80. The Dinner & Court was provisionally arranged with the Royal Hotel for 9 February 1962.
11th December 1961 Management Committee
Arrangements were put in hand for a Dinner & Court on 9th February 1962 - tickets sent out to club secretaries of Glenferness, Altyre, Cawdor, Ardclach and Grantown). Mr W J MacDonald was to be asked to take photographs and the hotel to be told that there were to be no press photographers.
Mr G Innes of the Nairnshire Curling Association to be contacted to re-convene a meeting regarding an ammendment which had not been voted on - i.e. that Nairn's six rinks should consist of two separate 3-rink sections for the Leven Cup.
There had been complaints that members had been unable to get a game at Nairn. It was agreed that the Club ice was for the use of regular and occasional members only, except at matches and by invitation. Country club members wishing to play could join Nairn as occasional members at 30/- per annum
Arrangements were made for a surprise testimonial to be presented to Fred Knowles at the Dinner on 9th February.
The following photographs, part of the old club-house decor, are not dated. Because they show the new metal lamp standards, installed in after January 1960 and before the death of Robert Taylor in Novemner 1962, they are likely to have been taken during the 1961-62 winter.
