CURLING
THE DOCTORS DEFEATED
Dear Reader,—Do not be alarmed, your health is not in danger of being neglected; the heading refers only to a happy game of curling on the Ardclach curling pond, when Ardclach had the pleasure of meeting two visiting rinks from Nairn. Although, as I say, the doctors were defeated, the dentist came to their rescue and with his skilful curling very nearly brought off an overall win for his team. So I would say to the doctors, " Hats off to the dentist."
The rinks were Nairn No. 1—Dr J. Innes Watson (skip), Dr Douglas Macdonald, George White and A. Fraser, against Ardclach No. 1— Jas. Mackintosh (skip), D. Macarthur, jun., A. Innes and Edward James. Result—Nairn 4, Ardclach 9. Rink, No. 2—Nairn—T. Walls (skip), D. McGregor, J. Michie and A. Ellen. Result—Nairn 9, Ardclach 6. It always gives we Ardclach curlers the greatest pleasure to have the Nairn curlers up on our ice and we hope to have them back again with us soon, if Jack Frost permits.—Yours, etc.,
ARDCLACH CURLER
13th March 1950. AGM (43rd)
Held within the Royal Hotel Nairn. The Office-bearers were elected as follows: President - H J Munn; Vice President - T Walls; Chaplain - Rev A Gemmell; Ice Master - T Walls; Secretary & Treasurer - C W Caple Wookey. Membership totalled 84. The accounts showed a balance of £467-17/8, less the estimated outstanding liabilities for resurfacing the East pond and the lighting, totalling £370.
I Mackintosh and D MacGregor had tied for the Whitelaw Kettle, and Dr D MacDonald had beaten Dr J I Watson in the Park Cup final. It was agreed to look at resurfacing the West pond and for the Management committee to proceed if the cost was reasonable.
21st July 1950 - Management Committee
The East pond was inspected, and the material used to fill the depressions had proved unsatisfactory. The account from G Duncan for resurfacing the East pond had come in at £409-9/- . As the original contract price of £300 had been greatly exceeded, the Treasurer was instructed to send a cheque for £300 in full settlement.
Regarding the West pond Mr Paton had informally approached the firm pf Wm Sharp, who were resurfacing the High St., who estimated the cost of resurfacing to be between £300 and £350. The secretary was instructed to get a specification and tender.
September & October 1950 - Management Committee
It was gareed to enter two rinks for the RCCC Competition to be held in Perth. Wm Sharp's tender had come in at £402, and it was agreed that this was "more than the Club could entertain", and that they "should investigate other means".
Subsequently T Walls (Ice-master) and R Paton (Burgh Surveyor) had looked into surfacing the West pond with bitumen, using direct labour, at an estimated cost of £200. It was resolved to proceed. Mr Paton would arrange the supply of bitumen and the hire of the Town's light roller, and Mr Fred Knowles would engage sufficient labour at 2/6 an hour and 3/9 an hour overtime. A further meeting would be held to consider the financial position which would arise.
