Special General Meeting to discuss the opening of the Elgin Ice Rink and the implications for Nairn Curling Club.
l5th February, 1993 at 8.30p.m in the Golf View Hotel.
BACKGROUND
After 12 years of rumours and counter rumours, Elgin Ice Rink is to become a reality on 1st July, 1993 and will be open for curling for season 1993/94.
The Ice Rink will be part of a leisure complex owned by Moray Leisure Ltd., although a significant part of its funding will be by Moray District Council as part of their planned expenditure to improve the health of the people of Moray and surrounding district.
In addition to a five sheet curling rink, there will be a 25 metre swimming pool and other smaller pools with a 45 metre flume. There will also be the first leisure unit in Scotland for those recovering from heart attacks etc. A cafe will be situated within the building whose menu will encourage healthier eating (no chipsl), and also a bar looking out over the rink (side view).
The remit of the Managing Director, Ruari MacKenzie, is to maximise the use of the premises and encourage healthy exercise. He is fully aware both the pool and the ice rink will be run at a financial loss with the tab being picked up by M.D.C.
QUESTIONS TO BE. ADDRESSED BY MEMBERS
1. Do we wish to stay within Moray Province whether based in Elgin or Inverness, or seek membership of Inverness Province if the Province decision is not in keeping with our views?
2. Do we wish Moray Province to stay in Inverness, move to Elgin or divide its competitions between both venues in 1993/94?
3. Do we wish for club curling to stay in Inverness, move to Elgin or divide its competitions between both venues in 1993/94?
4. Assuming an R.C.C.C. Rink Championship is held at Elgin - which ice rink would our club enter teams to?
5. How many Nairn members would seek to join other clubs in Inverness Province if the club moves its curling to Elgin?
Alan C Stanfield
Conclusions Reached
1 Nairn Curling Club wished all the clubs in the Moray Province to remain together in competition for at least the following year.
2 NCC would vote in favour of holding the competitions at Inverness Ice Rink, but if all other clubs (which was highly unlikely) favoured Elgin, then Nairn would follow suit.
3The most likely scenario was that the Province would split in the coming season and the option of dividing into an East and West Province with league play-offs at the end of the season carried the most favour. Regarding the KO competition, it was agreed to suggest that the top hal of the draw would play in one venue and the bottom half in the other with it being a matter of luck where one might be drawn.
4 For Club curling it was felt that it should be split between both venues to allow members to asses the facilities at Elgin, but at the same time continue the support for Inverness. Depending on the Province decision, a decision on how much curling should go to Elgin would be taken but it was agreed that the SG League would be split between both venues and decisions made on other competitions at a later date.
5 It was accepted that one or two members might be lost from the club if the club moved it’s curling to Elgin, as these members were nearer to Inverness.

The Match Secretary reported that the Moray Province League Division 1 had been won by Graham Kerr's rink, and the Province KO competion by Jimmy Asher's rink. The County had retained the Leven Cup. Outdoor curling had taken place at Grantown and Achnatone.
In the coming season Moray Province competitions were to be split between Inverness & Elgin ice rinks.
The club was to book sheets of ice for the coming season, 20 at Elgin and 45 at Inverness, for club competitions, and the Sandy Gunn League competition was to be extended to 9 rinks.

Past President’s Badges were presented to : Eric F Brown, Donald Fraser, James Asher, Ron Berry, Harold Forrester, Alistair Mackintosh, David Kerr, Robert Pottie, Des Coleman, Eric McPhee and Dr A Adam.
The centre would provide an excellent facility for the people of Moray over many sports, but curlers were less than enthusiastic. The ice hall faced south with large picture windows. Heavy curtains had to be added to stop the sunshine softening the ice. Changing facilities were in the skatehire and the area designated for meeting and socialising was small, with a very limited view of the ice pad.
