COUNTRY - TOWN RIVALRY
It was decided at the last annual general meeting of the Nairnshire Association to institute the playing of an annual competition between town and country, in addition to the long established competition for the "Leven" cup. The vice-president (D. A. Macarthur), well-known cricketer and curler, then made known his intention to present a cup (formerly won for curling by his father, the late D. A. Macarthur, to the rink on either side with the highest number of shots up over their opponents. On Wednesday the match was played on the Nairn club pond and resulted in a win for the Town (117 shots) over the Country (97 shots).
At the end of a fine day's curling the vice-president in the unavoidable absence of the president (Lord Leven) called on R (Bob) Stewart, the oldest curler playing—he is well over 80 —to present the Macarthur cup to the leading rink Nairn No. 1 (skip, T. Walls, F. Knowles, A. Daniel and K. M. Cameron). The leading rink on the side opposite to the cup-winner with the highest number of shots up over their opponents, Ardclach No. 2 (skip, H. Mackenzie, D. Macarthur, J. Fraser, P. Smart) received a bottle of whisky.
E Brown (president, Nairn Club) warmly thanked the Association vice president Mr D. Macarthur for his generosity in providing the cup for competition. /

Eighty-five curlers spent a happy and enjoyable night at the annual dinner and court of Nairn curling Club in the Royal Hotel on Friday. The chairman and president, Mr E. F. Brown, presided and after a fine dinner provided by Mr and Mrs Walker, the toast list, commencing with the Queen given by the Chairman, and " Jack Frost" proposed by the Rev. J. W. Cumming, was carried through. The Chairman spoke to the “Royal Caledonian Curling Club" and the very able reply was given by Mr Gilbert McClung, the R.C.C.C. president. Mr McClung only arrived from Zermatt three days previous to visiting Nairn and he left next morning at 7.15 to allow himself two hours in Edinburgh before catching a plane for America.
The toast to “Neighbouring Clubs" was proposed by Mr J. G. Watson with the reply by Mr S. Kirkland, Inverness; "Wives and Sweethearts" was given by Mr K. MacDiarmid; reply, Mr D. Fraser, and the Chairman was toasted by Mr D. H. Mackenzie.

A GREAT CHALLENGE MATCH (Contributed)
A long-standing challenge match took place at the Achnatone pond, home of the Ardclach Club, on Thursday last. The principals in the game were that veteran from Ardclach, a player possibly with as much experience of outdoor curling as any other man in Scotland —Bob Stewart, and his opponent, that scientific ex-skip and ex-president of the Nairn Club, David Brown, both veterans of the famous Carsebreck bonspiels, and the prize was the custody of the "David Brown Standard."
David Brown marched his team Cyril Wilson, Eric Brown and Fred Knowles—on to the ice with the " Standard" flying and Was met on the pond by Bob and his henchmen —Sandy MacKay, Douglas Stewart and Davie Macarthur. So the battle was joined and a real tussle it was. Twelve ends were played with David Brown having the honour of winning and taking the “Standard" back to Nairn with a score of 13 shots to 10.
It was generally agreed that the ice at Achnatone that day was the finest ever seen there, or for that matter, anywhere else. Hospitality was provided by the Ardclach Ladies Curling Club and was very much appreciated.
LADY PLAYERS
Although it has no direct connection with the challenge, it is worthwhile noting that a body exists known as the Ardclach Ladies Curling Club and further, that Cawdor also has a Ladies Section and matches have already taken place between those very friendly rivals. The writer had the pleasure of watching a game between Ardclach and Glenferness, at Achnatone, when the home team had two lady members playing for them and they contributed greatly to an Ardclach win. Both Janet and Joan played as if they had played as often as the beaten challenger and we can look forward confidently to the day when one sees in the news that the Ardclach or Cawdor Ladies have just put on a good show at the Highland Bonspiel at Perth.
Perhaps the Nairn Club might learn something from their country cousins here!

THREE RINKS AT DALCROSS
After being in abeyance for exactly 40 years, the Dalcross Curling Club are now using the old curling pond located near Dalcross Station on land kindly granted by the Moray Estates Development Co. Some of the older generation will remember the flourishing "curling" club which existed before the First World War. The enterprising new club can now curl on three rinks of natural ice as well as the single rink they made on waste land formerly used by the R.A.F.
The new Dalcross Club have taken full advantage of the long spell of frost and have played against Nairn, Ardclach, Cawdor, Strathspey and Highland, as well as sending two rinks to the Grand Match.
The first match on the old pond was played on Feb. 7 when Cawdor sent two rinks to Dalcross. The result—Cawdor (skips J. Craigie and W. Allan) beat Dalcross (skips W.McDonald and A. Matheson) by one shot.

15th April 1963 - Annual General Meeting
Tribute was paid by president Eric F Brown on the passing of Colonel Peter McFarlane Cram, a highly respected Honorary Member, and one of the Club's last founding members. Col. Cram was a chartered architect and had been Burgh Surveyor for Nairn and had designed the original Lodgehill Clubhouse. He had also been the commanding officer of the Nairn Home-guard during World War 2. There is an apocryphal story during Britain’s darkest hour in 1940 when Col. Cram was heard to remark to sergeant Peter Green, the local draper: “Green! The invasion’s on tonight, so you carry on here - I am going up to Glenferness House for dinner with Lord Leven.” Straight out of a "Dads' Army" script!
Concern expressed at the habit of the RCCC in writing to the secy. Of the Highland Group Curling Clubs instead of to the Province Secretary.
Eric Brown was thanked for his enterprising work and the gift of a sink for the clubhouse.
