CURLING CLUB'S BIG MEMBERSHIP
The Nairn club membership was open to servicemen stationed in Nairn throughout the war. The "Canadian friends" referred to here were members of the Canadian Forestry Corps.
The annual general meeting of the Nairn Curling Club was held in the Royal Hotel Nairn on Friday – Mr Robert Park, president in the chair.
The office bearers and skips for the coming season were elected; Patron, Mr Wm Whitelaw; Patroness Mrs Whitelaw,; President, Mr Robert Park,; Vice-president, Mr James Lamb; Chaplain, rev F S Gordon Fraser,; Auditor, Mr John Macgregor; Icemaster Major D Fraser; Hon. Secretary and Treasure, Mr D. Michael. Skips:- Messrs Robert Parke Dr J Innes Watson, D Michael , D Fraser, with reserves P McF Cramm, D A Maclean, P M Pottie, and P F Lauder. The President and the secretary were appointed the representative members.
From the Secretary and Treasures report it appeared that the membership remained at the high level of 67 members of whom six were engaged in military or naval service.
It was arranged, as last year, to give members of other Curling Clubs engaged on military service the courtesy of the club, and it was left to the Committee of Management to endeavour to arrange one or more matches with our Canadian friends in the district.
The Nairn club had great difficulty in retaining the services of an iceman for any length of time until after the war. Consequently, the Lodgehill ponds were not well maintained. Nevertheless, there were a large number of active members throught the war years as the 1941 minutes record and the frosty winter of 1940-41 provided 18 days of good curling .It was also recorded that two of the founding members, Joseph Mackay and Alex Joiner, were now about to retire as skips.
