DAVID BROWN SHIELD WON

Forty players competed in the David Brown Jubilee competition held by the Nairn Curling Club at Inverness Ice Rink. Rinks for this competition are drawn by ballot, and skips must not be regular or reserve skips. Winners were— Peter -Green, skip, Gordon M. Maclean, C. C. Young, jun., and R. T. Mirtle, 8 shots up.

R WILSON SKIPS WINNERS

Twenty-four curlers from Ardclach club took the ice at Inverness Rink on January 8 to compete in the Club's major competition - the Wilson Trophy. A very keen com­petition resulted in an eight-shot victory for a rink skipped by Robert Wilson supported by Don McLean, Moira Hutcheon and Sandy McKay, Consolation winners were — Joan Fraser (skip), Jessie Fraser, Nancy Tulloch and Jim Craigie. /

NAIRN No.1 QUALIFIES

E. F. Brown (skip), J. R. Asher, R. J Mirtle and H. Forrester are the Moray Province League cham­pions, following last week's narrow 7-5 win overthe Elgin rink, skipped by J. Ward, in their final game. Nairn's No. 1 rink now go into the No. 5 Group 'champion of champions' tourney for the Haig Trophy later this season, when the champions of Inverness, Ross and Grampian Provinces are known.

CURLING - SIX COURT INITIATES

The 65th annual dinner and court was held in the Royal Hotel, Nairn, on Friday February 4, when president Donald Fraser was in the chair, and extended a warm welcome to the 77 curlers present, including members from Dollar, Falkirk Ice Rink, Inverness Ice Rink, Rothes, Fochabers, Ardclach, Dalcross, Forres, Highland and Lochness.

Grace was said by the club chaplain Rev. John Taylor. The chairman gave the toast "The Queen" and during the evening the following toasts were given:— Jack Frost—Festus Moffat, secretary Falkirk Ice Rink. Royal Caledonian Curling Club—The chairman; reply—Innes Stewart, representative Highland Group 5, Royal Caledonian Curling Club. Neighbouring Clubs—Ronald D. Gordon; reply —Robin Kelly, Lochness Club. Wives and Sweethearts—Dr Bryce Stewart.

MEMORABLY INSTALLED

The following initiates were successfully and memorably installed : From Nairn — George I. Milne, Neil M. Gordon, David W. Sutherland. From Ardclach — Tom Morrow. From Dalcross— James McBean, John Matheson.

The Nairn Curling Club were indeed fortunate with their entertainers—Ronald D. Gordon, (voluntary solo); Mr James McMorran at the organ; Pipe-Major Gordon Asher for his piping to the Court of My Lords Officers - Messrs James Asher, R T. Mirtlc and Dr Bryce Stewart.

The Court was conducted by Mr Tom Walls (My Lord), who had travelled from Cambusbarron for the occasion.

Buchan Ralph and his willing committee — I. A. Mackintosh, David Kerr and Ron Berry, are to be congratulated on producing the six candidates to Court with such originality in each case.

ROUPED THE STOUP

The closing speech was given by Robert T. Mirtle thanking the chairman for conducting such a successful evening.

Praise is due to the hotel management for serving an excellent meal so adeptly. Robert T. Mirtle rouped the Stoup which was purchased by W. Park.

CURLING

Nairn Rink Advances

Eric F. Brown's Nairn rink beat Aviemore Osprey rink (S. Roberts (skip) 5-3 in the final qualifying game in the playdown at the Aviemore Ice Rink on Saturday night and the Nairn rink will now represent Aviemore in the forthcoming North Area finals in the Scottish championship.

Other members of the winning Nairn rink were: J. R, Asher, R. T. Mirtle and D. H. Forrester. The Nairn rink won the Captain's Silver Salver which was handed over by Mr M. Marshall, general manager at the Aviemore Centre, on Saturday night.

Inverness houses the North Area finals on Feby. 25 26 and 27, when the winning rinks from Aberdeen, Perth, Dundee, Kirkcaldy Falkirk, Aviemore and Inverness (T. Pendreigh, skip), will be battling for 3 places in the all Scotland final at Dundee. The winners then go forward to the world championship ‘Silver Broom ' series in Germany.

With so much at stake in the North finals, the curling competition will be fierce, and the standard is expected to be the highest ever seen at Inverness. It is hoped that keen curlers will make a full house to see what should be an excellent three day session. Local curlers are keeping their fingers crossed that the Inverness (Tom Pendreigh, skip) and Aviemore (E. F. Brown, skip) rinks will qualify for two of the three places in the Dundee finals.

OUTING TROPHY WINNERS

Ten rinks competed for Nairn Curling Club Annual Outing Trophy at Inverness Ice Rink. After very keen, and exciting play the winners were—Dr J. Macfadyen (skip), Peter Green, Ross Christie, David Stewart—12 shots up.

President D. Fraser handed over the awards to the winning rink.


24th April 1972 - Annual General Meeting

Due to a mild winter, no outdoor curling had been reported. The iceman’s wages had been: 112 hours @ 60p per hour = total £38.60p. The General fund stood at £33.76 and the reserve fund at £123.45

Among the season's success were: Annual Outing trophy won by Dr MacFadyen. In the Nairnshire Curling Association, Nairn had won the Leven Cup and Eric Brown, the MacArthur Cup. The Club had won a District Medal match against Highland Ladies held at Inverness Ice Rink, 35 shots to 25.

The rink of E F Brown, J Asher, R T Mirtle & D H Forrester won the Moray Prov. ‘A’ league, the No 5 group Dewar’s League and played in the Scottish Finals in Dundee, representing Aviemore. They had also won the Allander at Aviemore, beating W Drysdale (Perth) 10 - 9.

A new RCCC rule (no 53) was noted : “When a match is being played by time, no head may be started excepting an extra head after the time signal has been given. If the time signal has not been given when the last stone of the last played end has come to rest, then another head shall be played.”

The Reo-Stakis organisation had taken over Inverness Ice Rink. Ice charges per head for the following season were to be: daytime ice - 60p, 5.15 to 7pm - 45p, Sundays and evenings - 70p

The office-bearers elected for the coming year included: President: Robert T Mirtle; Vice-president James R Asher. Secretary & Treasurer: Sandy Gunn. and Match Secretary: Wm. Park.

21st August 1972 - General Meeting

The passing of S A ('Gusty') Morrison and Walter J MacDonald was noted. The 1973 Dinner & Court was fixed for February 2nd.

28th November 1972. - Management Committee

The passing of Past President James Webster was noted.

Quotations from the dinner were being obtained from the Royal Hotel and the Highland Hotel.

There had been a 50% remission in rates by the Town Council - £43.50 to £23.40.
