Due to loss of rights over the resources and land by the indigenous people under the nation-state expel them in exclusion and dispossession in the era of globalization started in mid 16th century. In response to this, indigenous political movements had emerged in various countries for their rights. Initially, states responses vi
olently and severely suppressed the Indigenous movements without any recognition and existence of indigenous peoples. Later, mostly in 1900s, indigenous movements got recognitions as well as states started negotiation with the native peoples while making any rule/act/law related to resources and lands of the native peoples. Today, having gained credibility, the indigenous peoples are demanding ancestral rights. The attitude of the governments towards the indigenous movements, have been changed with time. One of the major breakthrough in states response to indigenous movement is giving constitutional recognition to the rights of the indigenous peoples. The Working Group on Indigenous Populations (WGIP), a subsidiary body of United Nations has been drafted Universal Declaration on Indigenous Rights and abide by its member states in international level.
