Concerns of Youth

Mention the college related concerns of youth. Discuss the teacher student relationship you would like to adopt at the college level to foster a 'learning environment'.

The main concerns of the youth of higher education are:

  1. Theoretical Formulations and Practical Insights education of young persons and work hard to promote a suitable learning environment.  They often have to work in unsupportive climates where lack of proper infrastructure, shortage of funds inadequate teaching materials, dogmatic leadership and non supportive staff play a role in reducing efficiency. Teachers are a vital support system for the students, since they guide them through the 'bridge' between the world of studies and the world of work.  Young adults need academic guidance and the feeling that the people in authority are concerned about their welfare.

 2. Derogatory comments and a negative attitude on the part of teachers induce alienation and insecurity. They need attentive and empathetic hearing from their teachers in order to develop positive perceptions of self, creativity, social productivity, make a meaningful contribution to the college and demonstrate effective learning.

 3. In the effort to be unique youth sport distinctive types of dresses, talk in a particular language (lingo), and listen tome kind of music. These trends are in fashion or music, keep changing at a fast rate and the youth are constantly on the look out for the latest 'in thing'. Proper guidance is required from the teachers so that students can take care of their career rather than wasting their time in these cheap activities.

4. Student aggression is common in the college and universities during the student elections or in some cases college functions.  Student unions which represent an attempt at self-governance by students so that they can develop qualities of leadership and function as effective citizens of a democracy have been waylaid by vested interests. Counseling session may help to students to avoid aggressive attitude during the elections.

 5. Indian youth is alarmingly wide and reflects the increasingly chaotic societal conditions. Lawlessness and corruption have become the order of the day in spite of our commitment to the establishing of an equitable social order.

Unemployment is also on the rise leading to a scenario where educated students are unable to get job according to their caliber resulting in frustration and anger.

 6. Ragging is one of the ways in which the senior students of the college get friendly with the new entrants.  However, as many cases bear testimony in the history of colleges, ragging can go wrong. Under the garb of 'toughening' & real world teaching to the juniors, many senior students sexually abuse them or become physically violent. It may result in life long trauma, academic and career jeopardizes, vulnerability, unworthiness, shame, depression, anxiety and low self-esteem into the juniors. Supreme Court of India has banned the ragging from all academic institutions and it is responsibility of the teachers and institutions to keep watch on such wrong activities.

One of the crucial factors influencing the attitudes of the youth as well as success in college is the teacher-student relation.  How students perceive college is dependent on individual teacher student interaction, curriculum transaction, attitudes about students and to some extent by the teacher-parent equation.  The majority of teachers are well trained and competent people who are concerned about the Guidance.  The concerns of youth can be handled carefully by health teacher-student relations.
