Unit Plan of Subject

b) Select a unit from the subject of your choice at college level. Prepare a detailed unit plan on the same unit.

Content organization is major activity of the higher education. It is a major skill in the design of any one of the input alternatives including the lecture. University prescribed syllabi and topics in a course and these could be arranged in several ways. Every discipline has its own structure that organizes its content. Hence, topics in different disciplines may demand different ways of organization of a lecture. For instance: A Psychology lecturer arranges the contents pertaining to study of human behaviour by different theorists under five groups viz., Social learning theorists, developmental theorists, psychoanalytic theorists, cognitive theorists and behaviorist theorists.

A teacher cannot choose his style of content treatment arbitrarily. He has to keep in his mind a number of parameters. These may include learners' abilities, interest and the psychological sequencing. There are mainly three kinds of psychological sequencing the teacher can refer to, while deciding a particular style of treating the content. These are:

a) Familiar to unfamiliar

b) Simple to complex

C) Rewarding.

Let us discuss these skills related to the good lecture:

a) Familiar to Unfamiliar:

The teacher is required to organise its content including examples, illustrations, figures, tables and short notes etc., which may explain the content easily.  The contents must start with the familiar situations or events of the learner. From these familiar experiences of the learner, the teacher leads him to unfamiliar experiences.

b) Simple to Complex

The second way of organising the content may be done by the teacher in a way wherein simple concepts are presented first to be followed by complex concepts. For example, a teacher of Environmental Science may start with the factors responsible for pollution, before discussing the environmental hazards.

c) Rewarding

The third way of organising the content is the principle of ensuring success experience. Here, the teacher provides an assignment or exercise to students where they get a success experience in solving that exercise instead of a failure experience.

Depending on the nature of the discipline and methods of teaching, contents are restructured accordingly.  Restructuring requires skill on the part of the teacher. This can be acquired only through practice. Therefore, to acquire the skill, we should choose smaller content portions and re-sequence them in more than one way and consult at least two other teachers of the same discipline in the matter.

My Content Plan: As being a science, teacher, thermodynamics is my favorite subject and steps on a unit plan on the subject is devised below:

1. Table of Contents

2. Introduction

3. Basic Principles and Theories of the Thermodynamics

4. Modern Theories of Thermodynamics

5. Statistical Model of Thermodynamics

6. Case Study of Thermodynamic Issues

7. Commercialization of Thermodynamic Processes

8. Solved Numerical Problems

9. Solved Theoretical Examples

10. Quizzes

11. Practice Exercise

12. Concept problems

13. Evaluation Problems

14. Unit & Chapter tests
