Structure of Higher Education

In Indian system of higher education, higher education is started after twelve years of formal education in pattern of 10+2. It includes the education imparted after the 10+2 stage, i.e. ten years of primary and secondary education followed by two years of higher secondary education. 

The first degree obtained after 12 years schooling is called Bachelor's degree. It is obtained after three years study in the case of liberal arts and basic science. Four years bachelor's degree is in the case of most professional degrees like Engineering, Medical etc. 

Admission in Bachelor's degree in Law can be obtained after first degree.

The post graduate degree programme involves two years of study after first degree. The minimum period of an M.Phil degree in one and half year and Ph.D. a further two years. The highest degrees are D. Litt. and D.Sc. which are awarded after the Ph.D degree for original contributions of the highest order.

In Indian education system, two simultaneous degrees are not allowed till 13 Apr 2022. UGC has issued guidelines to all Universities that they had choice to run two simultaneous degree programmes. 

Each child, who is in 06 to 14 years, has right to get free schooling under the Right to Education Act. Therefore, each recognized primary school has to reserve 25% seats compulsory for underprivileged students.
