An infinitive is an unconjugated verb: for example, manger, choisir, apprendre, avoir.
1. Infinitives as impersonal orders or in recipes.
2. Infinitives as a subject.
*This is not very common.
3. Infinitives the complement of a verb.
*This is very common, and you’ve used it before.
Some verbs are followed directly by an infinitive (with no preposition).
à + infinitif: Some verbs must be followed by the preposition à before an infinitive.
de + infinitif: Some verbs must be followed by the preposition de before an infinitive.
There is no rule about which verbs are followed by à or de. You will need to memorize each verb with its preposition, just like you memorize nouns with their masculine or feminine articles (le, la).
