Role of the Shield

The Order of the Shield is the lowest rank in the Knighthood. Knights of the Shield tend to be the younger knights, and they make up the bulk of Knighthood. It is at this time they are taught to be loyal and honorable, and also they are taught to serve the gods of good and to further their cause. They are also taught obedience to their superiors. An ideal Knight of the Shield is humble. There is room for senior advancement in the ranks of officer, but skilled knight-at-arms are encouraged to join the Lance upon gaining their spurs. Knights of the Shield learn the basic tenets of virtue, wisdom and defense. Protective and just, they temper their clanmates with words of wisdom and gentility.

According to the texts in the Crown Office historically the tasks have been Council to the Crown for the General, High Clerist for the Colonel. Lore, scholarship and Keeper for the Captains and Information and spirituality for the Lieutenants. Once gaining his spurs, a Shield Knight must choose if they are to apply for the Lance, or remain in service to the Shield Order. The Shield Knight position itself is reserved for those knights who have gained their spurs, but not yet chosen a path.
