[ 8] Leumas: Clarification/Summation

Sun Apr 8 22:24:23 2007

To: Knighthood Immortals

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm longwinded, so in summary of that last ooc. Everyone in the game

will get copied onto the storynotes tomorrow. Everyone in the game is

allowed to participate at their ability. I. E. No supermen swooping down

solo and wiping out Knighthood's soldiers and stealing the Light of

Salvation.

Cahlizna gets to be the sole judge of whether or not people can do what they

say they're doing and I'll go by that ruling. If the immy says a

Bloodluster got the light, I'll give that Bloodluster our relic.

So be good, and appropriate. It's not going to be a +300hp light or

anything imm loaded. It's just going to be something neato to be hopefully

be passed down amongst Knights.

Good luck, and most importantly, have fun.

[ 7] Leumas: Lux Lucis

Sun Apr 8 22:18:12 2007

To: Knighthood Cahlizna

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You will all note that I have posted the first three storynotes in this

series. The premise is spelled out therein. In the Ruins of the Original

Keep a tomb of a Shield General has been found with a light source inlaid

upon the lid of a sarcophagus.

Though Leumas is "researching" this Unknown Shield General and this Light, I

used the name we're eventually going to give it "Lux Lucina ap Salus" which

means The Light of Salvation, in the storynote titles. This will be a

restrung item that might go to Knighthood, might go somewhere else, might

disappear back into history.

The result will be up to you, the people and players of Knighthood and

Algoron.

I'll provide Cahlizna with the object (won't be anything non-standard, the

person who gets it just gets a cool restring to something that you'd

probably already use... Either ball of brilliance, ray of light, etc.) ,

The blue diamond, and part of Leumas' part in this story is going to be

writing the backstory of this Shield General and the Light of Salvation.

So for your stories this is the background for y'all. Feel free to write

your part within the contexts of your rank and the situation.

Who - You

What - The Race and Security of the Ruins of the Original Keep for the

Knights of Serpantol.

Where - Anywhere between Gareth's Keep and an undisclosed location near

Serpantol. The forests leading to the location. And the lands and areas

around the Original Keep.

When - Now would be good.

Why - Because the history and potential relics of Knighthoods past are

buried in these lands and the Yinn want them.

Keep in Mind for purposes of these storynotes officers DO hold command over

troops. For our purposes I use a general army structure. Generals command

whole armies. Colonels typically have command over Brigades which is

between 3000-5000 soldiers, Captains get Companies, of between 100-200

soldiers, Lieutenants command Platoons of between 20-50 soldiers. Knights

you're alot like a Sergeant so you would have a squad of 10ish men under

your command.

Squires, you do squirely things like fetch your masters horse, shield,

weapon, etc. Pages, sorry but you'll be getting me my coffee and digging

latrines. I'm joking about the latrines... But I take my coffee like I

like my women, sweet and light colored.

Again, you get first crack at read and response, but this WILL be going out

to everyone soon in case some people want to play protagonists.

[244] Leumas: Lux Lucis ap Salus (The Light of Salvation) - Part One

Sun Apr 8 21:20:21 2007

To: Knighthood ( Cahlizna )

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Scratch... Scratch... Scratch...

The quill meticulously flowed across the vellum parchment, a combination of

practical use and decorative art. The flowery lettering painstakingly

transferred the original words of Tesalon Gareth from the magically

protected journal onto the new tome that was to be displayed for the day to

day use for the Knights, saving the original from the oils and ravages of

hands and time. The relic, and more importantly, the ideas described within

were far important to put at risk where anyone under false pretenses would

have had access to it.

Scratch... Scratch... KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK.

Leumas looked up from the journal, careful to pull the quill away from the

parchment to prevent any drips. The paladin quickly threw some sand across

the page to set the ink onto the page but left the book open to allow the

drying process to continue in the air. It was highly unusual for him to be

disturbed these days, years past were the days when he had led Gareth, so

unless it was something that required his specific areas of knowledge or

expertise, or something that called the Keep to action, he was pretty much

left to his own to finish this labor... This honor.

"Come! " he barked out, eager to see to the business at hand and then

return to his scribing. The sooner the work was done, the sooner he could

return to active duty wherever his Lady Crown needed him most. He was

expecting a nameless page or a squire, so his face acknowledged surprise

when he recognized the face that was on the other side of the portal.

"Ave, m'lord Circe, " began the Lieutenant of Leumas' first platoon, Tandan

uth Undnal. As a rule, Leumas tried to know each of his officers, as

holding the rank of Colonel afforded him his own brigade, made up of five

battalions, each of these composed of five companies, and each of these of

five platoons... But he had to admit that at the rank that Tandan held he

sometimes forgot their names if not their faces. Tandan was special in that

it was his platoon that had been ordered to scout the northwest forests of

Serpantol to be on the watch for any clue that the scavengers had realize

that the objects they searched for were not there and so his name was of

particular importance to Circe and his brigade that had both soldier and

engineering elements attached to guard and continue the work of archaeology

on the ruins he had found in his pilgrimage.

The ruins where he had found the very journal he had just been transcribing.

"Lieutenant, have a seat... What has happened? " Leumas skipped the pomp

and circumstance that his rank usually required, knowing that the young

man's presence here meant something important was afoot.

"I have news m'lord. Some incredible, some incredibly bad. " replied the

scout while the colonel poured and handed him a glass of water.

"In that order then Tandan, " ordered Leumas.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tandan nodded in mid sip, and put the goblet down. "As you request

m'lord. First the good news. A week ago I am pleased to announce that the

Third engineering company was working on their dig in the twelve quadrant...

The ruins of what we've now been able to determine was the chapel.

Therein, the happened upon what looked to be a sepulcher which bore the

engraving Dur-Veyannh Kharus-Hayl uth Siccara' and the name of Daegius ap

Grinaard. " Leumas puzzled over the name, which was not missed by the

lieutenant. "Aye m'lord, the sarcophagus was that of a Shield General, but

the name is not one of the ones on the list. The tomb showed almost no

affects of scavenging, that we've noted, even in a place as holy as the old

ruins. "

Tandan took another quick sip of water. "As you can imagine it's taken us

some work to be able to read the glyphs on the surface of the stone. But it

would appear that Daegius served as a Shield General sometime between the

founding of the Keep and the yinn invasion. There are no notations that

showed his presence in battle against dae'Tok as we've found on some of the

other common tombs. "

Leumas nodded. The finding of a named tomb was cause for celebration, that

of a General even more so. "Excellent news indeed. And the bad? "

The knight shook his head in amusement, "I'm afraid sir, there's more.

Inlaid upon the surface of the coffin's lid was what appeared to be a

diamond of flawless design, backed with a mirror of gold much like you would

see in a hooded lantern. It fairly glowed with holy radiance. It was a

remarkable find, truly. But more, when Otono went to dust it off, the mere

touch of his hand caused the gem to flare into light. Truly sir, as bright

as day, it lit the entirety of the sight... And now to the bad m'lord.. "

Tandan turned grave indeed.

The lieutenant sighed, "I'm afraid m'lord that even at our location near the

scavengers the sky lit up... A beam as though from the heavens it seemed,

and the Gods of Light be praised for such a sign... But they might be more

careful as to whom sees such things, for unfortunately, our eyes were not

were not the only ones to see the flare. Our patrol had been mirroring two

advance companies of yinn. There is no doubt at all they were immediately

aware of the sky lighting up, and after an impossibly short time of

preparation, I'm afraid they were seen moving towards the ruins while. They

sent a pair of runners back to the main scavenger force, but we were able to

intercept them. The carried a message alerting the main army about the

disturbance in the sky and instructions to send reinforcements and further

orders. "

The colonel frowned and sighed. "I trust our men with my life, and I am

certain that we could hold off two companies of yinn, " said Leumas, "but it

won't be long before they realize that something is wrong when they don't

get further orders or the reinforcements they've requested and they send

more runners. " The elder knight looked back towards the journal on his

desk, was it a moment or a lifetime ago that making sure his calligraphy was

the biggest worry his day held? "We've bought a few days at best, most of

which are already wasted by the necessity of your traveling here. Indeed

they may have already realized something is awry and have moved forward. "

Circe rubbed his chin in thought, an old worrying habit that those around

him knew as a sure sign of a dilemma. "The security of the ruins has to be

of paramount importance, as well as the stewardship of this tomb and the

relic found within. The keep must be warned and call mustered for

volunteers. "

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Colonel continued his out loud musings. "We'll need as many men as

able to move north to secure the sight against the yinn while we decide what

to do with the findings, and then decide what to do about the sight in

general. It would be a shame to have to bury it again, when there is still

so much we can learn there... " Leumas looked up, realizing he was talking

to himself even though the lieutenant was still present.

"Thank you for the notification Lieutenant. Go tell the Lady Crown all that

you have seen and herald the Keep immediately, then pull a meal and

provisions, but do not tarry long before riding back to our men. It will

have to be a race north, and I still have to find out more about this Shield

General and the artifact that was found. " Leumas began to pull various

yellowed manuscripts from the library around him.

Tandan knew he had been dismissed by his Lord's return to his research and

left to tell the Keep of the jewel that had been found and the march the

yinn would soon be making that would put this artifact, the entire brigade

of soldiers, and worst, possibly the most holy sight in Knighthood's history

at risk.

A race indeed.

The young Lieutenant, at first almost nervous before her, soon settled down to

deliver his news with both excitement and trepidation. Gwynn nodded a few times

while he spoke and even smiled once or twice at the passion evident behind

the quietly spoken words.

She reviewed his statements and asked a few questions before giving him much the

same directions as Leumas seemed have already done, food and supplies and a quick

return. Time would be of the essence. She nodded with calm reserve as the Lieutenant

saluted and she dismissed him. A frown grew as she watched his exit.

Her mind began to race, filled with supply lists, available units, off duty, on duty

and all the thousand and one things associated with battle. With deliberation she

pulled a few charts from the bookshelf and stepped purposely towards the war room.

Another frown came as her gaze took in the empty room, but it was fleeting as she

called over her shoulder to the guard stationed nearby.

{cCall the officers. We will assemble in the library. Get someone to bring charts

and direct Sir Tegyr to see me directly when he returns from his patrols. Oh..send

word to Giles, Stanley and my squire, they will need to begin preparing as well.{x

The Lady Crown did not stop walking nor did she look back to make sure her orders

were being seen to, they would be seen to with the rapid response they always were.

Her officers would gather, each order would begin to prepare and plan their order's

response. Her Knights and Officers were all seasoned with few exceptions.

She could already hear shouts coming from the stables. Gile's voice carried

well as he yelled as some poor page. She fancied she could also hear her

destrier impatiently stomping.

At least there would be no snow this time.

A shiver passed over her reflexively at the memory.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mercerion sat quietly in Nadrik's temple, running through some of his

previous patrols in his mind. There were good, bad, ugly, and worse.

Successes, and failures. "Our enemies have grow strong, " he thought to

himself.

CLICK and then a short, quick rustling, which Mercerion recognized as a

salute. "Good Evening," Mercerion said as he rose and turned, returning the

salute to the War room guard.

"Lady Crown has asked that the officers meet her in the library, Captain,"

the guard stated dryly. "Aye, any idea as to what has happened?" Mercerion

asked, reaching down to gather his posessions. "Nay, she just sent me to

gather the officers, and prepare her squire, as well as stanley and giles,

Captain," the guard replied.

"Aye, thank you, continue your duties then," Mercerion replied with the wave

of his hand. Before he left the temple, he took a moment to utter a quiet

prayer to Nadrik, and then steeled himself for what was to come.

[244] Gwaine: Lux Lucis ap Salus (The Light of Salvation) - Rear Echelon Rising - Part 1

Mon Apr 9 02:57:48 2007

To: Knighthood Cahlizna (Imm)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gwaine glanced fondly at Muse's resting form, their long vigil, it seemed,

was almost at an end. The plans had been approved, word had, and the work

soon to commence. Soon, very soon, the sacred Ark will find its rest, safe.

He thought the long path trod, the long wait, a grim smile crossed his

features. He looked again, focusing on Muse's arms, clasped protectively

about the glowing Ark. He nodded.

He stood, stretching his limbs, tense muscles flexing as his ears perked to

the scurry of feet. Muffled voices in the corridor, the clinkety-clank of

armor sounded faintly to the Chapel.

He strode to the threshold, staring at the archway into the Armory.

" Something is about .. trouble .. ", he murmured quietly.

Unwilling to raise his voice, he waited impatiently, his fingers curling

against the Chapel entrance timber bracing. A slight motion in the Temple

caught his eye.

He blinked, peering into the dimly lit Temple, recognising Mercerion's

sitting form. He gestured, and then stopped.

" Must be praying. Not like you are about to go charging out there. ",

he grunted to himself,

" You've waited here long enough, a few minutes won't kill you. "

He straighted drawing a deep breath, murmuring the incantation of patience.

Haste is the bringer of discontent, the destroyer of reason.

You will breathe, and breathe again, and it shall pass from you.

You will call on the Lord, and he will bring that is yours in His time.

He drew another breathe, and raised his hand, tracing the familiar etching on

his breastplate, nodding quietly, a calmness easing through him.

Footsteps sounded in the Temple as a Keep Guard entered, saluting, politely

waiting for Mercerion to acknowledge him. They spoke briefly, and with urgency.

As the Keep Guard turned to leave, Gwaine rapped his knuckles on the timber

frame, drawing the guard's attention. Gwaine raised his hand, beckoning, as the

Keep Guard hurried to him.

" What news ..? , he asked the guard, tersely.

Listening intently to the guard's news, he nodded thoughtfully, pursing his lips,

in contemplation.

" Yes .. hmm .. the ruins of Serpantol, eh? ", he murmured almost to himself.

The Guard waited a moment turned as to leave, and Gwaine rapped his knuckles on

the timber frame again. The Guard skidding to a halt and turning about.

" Sir? ", the Guard asked, waiting.

" Yes .. yes .. find Varko, and send him to me. Urgently. Likely he'll be about

the Crystal Bay. "

He nodded brusquely, dismissing the guard, turning back into the Chapel, his arms

folded behind him, his pace thoughtful and measured.

" Serpantol .. always Serpantol. This time, it shall not be our retreat. "

" No sir. Not again. "

[243] Selath: Lux Lucis ap Salus (The light of Salvation) - Reporting in

Mon Apr 9 12:32:01 2007

To: Knighthood (Cahlizna)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Scoop.... Scoop.... Scoop....

Selath was quite familiar with a shovel, in a way it brought back memories

of working on the farm, but never had he shoveled so much manure. "The

pages must be over feeding them again" he thought quietly to himself. They

were always in such a rush that they never paid attention to how much feed

they would put into the stalls. Giles would yell at them of course, and

even now he could here him yelling at some poor page for not getting

something exactly right.

He grabbed a brush from the tack room and began brushing down Gwaine's war

horse. This was a new one. As Gwaine had just completed his path to become

Paladin they presented him with a fine steed indeed. A ornery one indeed.

Finishing up his work he smiled brightly, even in his years he still took

satisfaction in a job well done. Especially when he was able to out work

the younger squires and pages.

He laid the brush back in the tack and grabbed up his swords, he motioned

for one of the other pages to take the manure out of the stable room as he

left. Though he wasn't really in charge of any pages he still had some

seniority and he was Gwaine's squire, the pages knew not to anger Gwaine.

He made his way through the keep and noticed quite a bustle of activity, a

little more so than usual. He didn't concern himself with it much as he was

but a squire and if he needed to know, they would tell him. He looked a

moment through the portal to Tropica, watching closely for any enemy

movement before entering, a couple of times before he had been a bit hasty

and it nearly cost him his life. "Damn blue dragons" he muttered as he

walked through the portal and found himself at the port.

He knew the path to Crystal Bay well having trained there for quite some

time, as he walked he began casting spells and quaffing potions to aid him

the the training. Only the lemon scented ones had any flavor, the others

were quite distasteful, but necessary nonetheless.

He rounded the bend and found the crabs where they usually came ashore, mean

looking crabs as big as a grown man. As he approached they began snapping

their claws and approaching his position. He readied his weapons and began

striking, they were hard shelled but generally fell pretty easily, they fell

quicker and quicker these days as his skills improved. He finished off the

two crabs and walked the coast to where the fishermen were. An evil lot

they were, drunk, mouthy, red aura. They'd steal candy from a baby if one

came by.

'VARKO! '

The voice rang out loud and clear over the waves crashing gently on the

beach, Selath turned and saw another knight approaching, at first he thought

it was Daerten as he came to train with him often, but this one did not wear

leather, but armor of a guard. He stopped in his position and gave a salute

as the knight came to him, "You have orders to report to your Knight, meet

him in the chapel"

Selath nodded and saluted, knowing better than to question as to why.

He prayed for transportation home and as always, Austinian granted him the

journey, to which he gave a small prayer of gratitude. He walked quickly

back to the keep and found himself in the chapel standing before Gwaine he

saluted and awaited his orders.

[246] Daerten: Lux Lucis ap Salus (The Light of Salvation) - Forest Song - Part 1

Mon Apr 9 16:05:14 2007

To: Knighthood Cahlizna (Imm)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The forest rustled all about him, and the sonorous breathing of the great

Silver, Xiervanthian echoed in his ears. Schnelnect, the Red Robe, had just

left, and the Bloodlust were all about.

Jazaren with his swarm, Xaethiest, well .. he fled mostly.

Daerten wrinkled his nose, frowning at himself. His training had been

laggard these past days. He stood on the cusp of the last surge to his

final session with the old druidess.

" Imbue, Blizzard, Fatality, Firestorm "

He murmured to himself almost as a mantra. Finally, to face the Horde on

even terms, and he grinned to himself.

" Not that those blighters will ever stand on the field fair. "

Still, that was their way, and he knew his.

His knuckles whitened slightly as he twirled his staff, the imbued magicks

glowing as the staff fanned in his hands, a quiet whup-whup in the rustle

of the forest.

" Patience .. the forest is patient .. the Shimmering One is patient. "

" Yes, you will learn it too, old son .. you will learn .. or die. "

He chuckled to himself, and perked his ears at the rustling to the left.

Nothing.

He smiled, his lips moving to an unbidden tune, lilting words murmured to

himself.

" There's a secret in the forest "

" what, I cannot say "

" But starry skies and fireflies "

" are lighting me the way. "

He glanced up at the dragon, and cast his eyes about, and the closed his

eyes briefly to sense the forest about him.

" They are about, Shimmering One, and I daresay, they will come. "

" Eas ", Xiervantian rumbled, " This one is amused. "

The length of the mighty Silver was awe inspiring, and beside it, he felt

dimunitive indeed. He should be training, he knew.

But the battle was here and he would not leave. Not yet. Not yet.

The movement from the left was a flurry and burst, and without thought he

cast his wrath, the impact almost insignificant. He frowned, and wielded his

staff hoping to strike, but even then he knew, he had much to learn and this

futile.

His position exposed, and his actions marked, he knew there was little time

before the Bloodlust three fell upon him.

" Withdraw .. ",

a little voice murmured .. he shook his head,

" No ",

He admonished the voice gently,

" The field is taken, and your duty is here, the Shimmering One shall not

stand alone. "

Their appearance was sudden, the three were upon him as in a flash. Tumbled

to the forest floor, striking staffs, and piercing daggers, there was no

withdrawal now.

Silence.

He winced slightly, and grimaced. The return to the scene was swift, and

the mighty Silver stood over his belongings.

" Your things are untouched., the mighty Silver rumbled.

He was rueful, as he responded, " I should have withdrawn ".

" Perhaps ", rumbled the mighty Silver.

He grinned, " But that is not this Knight's way. ", and bent to gather

his things.

" Well said, softling. " the Silver rumbled again, twisting his head to

the left, the underbrush exploding to another futile attempt from the Horde.

The Keep was quiet on his return. He examined his armor carefully, testing

each piece as he re-armed. He looked up to an officer, scurrying past the

Armory.

" A Lieutenant, and of the Lance, that face .. hrmm .. Tand- .. I thought

that lot away guarding the engineers in Serpantol ..? "

" I wonder what's a-foot, perhaps the Yaeni stir .. hrmm .. ".

He frowned, glancing again, as it seemed the Keep burst into life. Footsteps

seemed to echo all about him. Terse sentences .. broken words. He must know.

A Keep Guard emerged from the Temple. The Guard's step intent and hurried,

Daerten glanced from the bench where his armor lay about.

" Hey, you .. good fellow, what all this bustle about then? ", he asked

casually.

The Guard paused, " Ah .. Sir Battenburg .. sorry .. I didn't ".

Daerten waved his words away casually, " Yes, yes .. but the news ..

" good man we shall have that first .. and the niceties after .. no? ".

The Guard stammered, " I'm on an urgent errand .. Sir Gw .. ".

Daerten grinned, interuppting.

" Nobbut a second for this, with your succinct summary, I am sure. Come

now .. we don't have all day and your errand awaits.

The Guard sighed, " It is Serpantol .. sir .. the ruins .. the Yinn .. ".

Daerten listened, frowning slightly as he tightened his armor clasps.

The Guard left, hurrying to make up for his little detour. The Lance Knight

of the forest, sat down comtemplatively, muttering to himself.

" Training .. I cannot dawdle anymore .. the forests of Serpantol will not

kind.

He chuckled despite himself, a melodious hum from his lips as he sang

quietly to himself, completing his equipping.

" Hush, hush "

" take silent breath "

" sigh the evening breeze. "

" Soft touch "

" upon my lips "

" kiss the dew, you please. "

His chuckle broadened to a pleasant smile,

" Yes, much training .. and much more. So much more .. "

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Office of the Shield general was quiet, as always. The silence

broken only by the rhythmic drawing of breath and steady beat of his heart.

He looked over the walls making notations in his head of where the plaques

shields and weaponry would go when the office was complete. Even now the

designs were laid and nearly complete, missing only a quote from Salinor of

Siccara. He had been awaiting the quote for quite some time now and it was

indeed becoming urgent that Salinor reply soon as the foreman was waiting

for the finished designs.

"All in due time, all in due time" If anything he had learned a bit of

patience in his tenure in the keep, whether in dealing with knights or

diplomats from other clans and kingdoms. But still, much was on his plate

these days, there was smelting to be done, offices to be designed, a ship to

be designed, the holy symbol of Nadrik to be completed, a work he will begin

again in a days time. He did his best to take it all in stride and show the

appearance that all is handled properly.

He made a few notations on a parchment to have it ready for the foreman to

begin building when he felt another presence in the room. "A door, must

remember to put in a door" he thought as he turned and nodded at the guard

standing before him.

"Sir, Lady Crown has orders for the officers to meet her in the library

immediately. "

"Very well. " Bolter replied quietly, it was not often Gwynn called

officers to her in such a manner, and when she did so, it generally meant

something was afoot rather than a simple "Hello".

He made his way through the halls, the knights were busy all around him,

Giles was yelling off in the distance.

The door to the library was open and he entered quietly and gave a nod to

those around him.

[ 37] Cahlizna: Battle at Serpantol

Tue Apr 10 12:17:31 2007

To: Knighthood

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Report, " ordered a large black furred yinn.

"The humans from Gareth have routed the raiding party, loses on both sides

were heavy. The one the call Landan was killed in the battle, " replied the

yinn scout.

"Did you discover what it is they have been looking for yet? " asked the

yinn leader.

"Not yet Cas'teh Naus, orders? "

For years yinn were scattered about algoron where there was once a time the

race was on the verge of complete conquests. Different packs fueded,

skirmishes were frequent, but it all lacked leadership and only resulted in

further set backs for the civilization.

The ruins of Serpantol included an area of several different packs, and an

even greater number of loners. The leader of the Naus pack had fallen to a

new strong leader, something that was long overdue. Slowly Cas'teh was

either uniting or conquering indivuduals, and packs with both strength and

guile. Now the knights had returned into what he boldly considered his

territory.

"They are here for a reason, find it before you return to me again Vausen, "

barked Cas'teh.

Vausen gathered his bow and arrow quiver pleased with the chance to maybe

kill another knight. He had four very memorable targets from the previous

battle. Coming back without what was requested of him required a large body

count among Naus enemies, and Vausen was no interrogator.

It left Cas'teh Naus alone in the field just outside of Serpantol. One of

several dozen sites that were on a visit rotation, each one with his own

advantage. This particular one was perfect for observing the wind

direction, and it was blowing in Naus packs favor.

If anything this Naus leader was a tactician, and there was more than one

way to win a battle and the next battle order was given in one word to all

messangers, "fire".

Acthus walked through the halls of the Keep, stopping only to acknowledge

the pages and squires bustling busily about. He walked past the storage

racks noticing a few squires attempting to aide each other with their armory

and weaponry. He smiled and continued to walk.

CLANK!

All of a sudden there was a loud clash, the sound of metal meeting metal.

He looked down and the up to see Captain Mamoritai in front of him. He

saluted and smiled, 'Captain, my apologies, I was walking about and did not

see you there. ' 'It is fine, Lieutenant. The Lady Crown has sent a call

for her officers, do join us within the Library, ' Mercerion said,

rearranging his breastplate. 'I come now, sir. '

They walked to the Library together side by side, silent. Each thinking of

what the reasoning for this meeting to be.

Camlach rode his white charger back across the drawbridge to the keep

with an ease that only comes with many long hours in the saddle. Having

just returned from a long stint of training, he was dirty, sweaty, and in

great need of sustenance and rest. Wearily, he guided the horse back with

his knees though it need little as it knew well the path back to its warm

stall with its fresh water and oats.

Upon arriving in the stable yard Camlach passed Giles berating a young page

for some transgression he was too tired to care about and went on in to the

stable. After spending a time currying the charger and seeing that his

faithful companion had been fed and watered he headed back out across the

stable yard towards the Keep proper in hopes of finding some left overs in

the mess hall before retiring to the barracks for the evening. He trudged

through abnormally busy halls with a tunnel vision brought on by fatigue.

He entered the deserted mess hall and was able to scrounge a dry but

otherwise edible biscuit and some dried apple flakes that he took with him

back towards the barracks. Munching away as he walked back to the room he

shared with three other squires, Camlach entered the armory which he noted

only passingly was filled with Knights and Squires sharpening weapons and

polishing armor. As he was exiting the room he heard a loud crash and

turned to see Captain Mercerion colliding with Sir Acthus.

At once Camlach moved to Captain Mamoritai's side to see if he needed help.

After a practiced crisp salute he asked 'Are you alright sir? Do you need

anything? ' 'I'm fine. I'll be in a meeting in the Libarary but I may need

you afterward so be where I can find you. ' his hero and mentor replied.

'I'll wait for you outside the library sir after I clean up. ' Camlach

resolved. With a quick nod and a smile Sir Mamoritai set off towards the

Library in a quick purposeful gait with Sir Rentar. After watching them go,

Camlach hastened to the barracks to clean up and re-don his swiftly scrubbed

and polished armor. Then leaving a note telling what had transpired on

Zacharach's bed, he all but ran towards the Library.

[261] Gwynn: Lux Lucis ap Salus (The Light of Salvation).

The Lady Crown waited in silence in the library. The sounds of the keep

grew as the word was spread and before long the library began to fill with

Officers. They were somber and curious, she did not keep them waiting long.

She turned her shoulder on the map on the wall and looked across the table

at her assembled Knights. She met each gaze with a measuring one of her own.

Quickly, she filled them in, repeating the words that the young Lieutenant

had so seemingly recently given to her.

She paused a long while at the end of the report and picked up a parchment

from the table. Frowning, she carefully dusted off a corner, smoothed an

edge then looked up at Leumas. She carefully, almost delicately as if the

parchment was glass, set the paper back on the table and pushed it toward

Leumas so he could see and the center of the table for all others to read.

{gArrangements will be made for their families. Generals of the Lance and

The library rapidly emptied and she was once more standing alone. Her gaze

fell to the parchment that remained on the table and a heavy sigh overtook

her. Just a name on a parchment now, she mused, when not to long ago a

breathing vibrant young man who was filled with the determination of his

office. Gone now.

{x

She left the library behind and retired to her chambers to seek a brief

moment to offer prayers for the dead.

Mercerion rose from the table quietly, a look of determination set into

his face as he made for the library's exit. "I should speak with the newer

Lieutenants, there is much to learn, much to teach. We will need discipline

in the times to come." Mercerion caught up to Acthus on his way out of the

library and whispered quickly to him, "Lieutenant Renetar, come with me."

As they exited the large library, Mercerion spotted one of his squires,

Camlach, and called him over.

No sooner had Camlach hustled to Mercerion than Mercerion said to him,

"Camlach, gather all of the lance members under the rank of Captain, we have

some things to discuss before this gets underway, have them meet out by the

path to Gareth. " Mercerion returned Camlach's now automatic salute, unable

to repress a slight smile as the enthusiastic squire ran off to fulfill his

assignment.

Mercerion then turned to Acthus, "Renetar, You've just recently accepted

your office of Lieutenant, and its responsibilities. It is rare that Gareth

be mobilized in full. I've noticed we have some knights that tend to be lax

in there preparations for battle, and this can not be allowed. We must

prepare our men for battle, for any possibility in the field. It is our

duty as officers to protect the men and women in our charge. We are going

to teach our men and women the importance of full preparation, before

ignorance or laziness can claim but a single life in this upcoming battle.

Another thing we must be certain to stress, as Lady crown put it in her

briefing, is unity. We can not afford to have disobeyed orders by a group

of heroic pages, who will end up only being remembered, and not walking away

from the field of battle. Now go, gather your things, gather your squires,

and meet me outside. We are going to start are preparations for war, now. "

Mercerion returned Acthus' salute leave to accomplish his assignment as

well.

Mercerion proceeded into the now bustling armory, stock full of knights

running around, preparing weapons and armors of all shapes and sizes.

Mercerion noted, but did not act on the fact that he recieved few salutes as

he walked through the armory. These men and women show flare, and desire

for what they do... But they will need to remember discipline on the field.

" Mercerion thought to himself as he strode purposefully through the armory,

on his way to the parade grounds. "Discipline will come... We will see to

that.

As Mercerion passed the altar room, he chanced a glance inside, and saw more

knights gathered in prayer. Knights of each division, and of nearly every

rank. Mercerion's hand came to the holy symbol around his neck, as he

quietly prayed for his men, and his family.

A chill wind hit Mercerion as he stepped oustide Gareth, tousling his cape

and whistling through his helm. He made his way to the parade grounds and

waited for his men to come, silently reflecting upon the love of his family,

and the teachings of his mentor.

The parchment Gwynn showed upon the table was quite clear. Knights have

He worked his way through a growing number of knights to the temple. Where

he brought out a quill and parchment.

The ink flowed freely over the parchment as he began scratching with the

quill. If he learned to do anything, it was to write with clarity and

brevity. He saw no sense in using fancy long words to describe a simple

meaning when a short sentence would suffice.

Colonel Moraen,

Ensure that services are arranged for the fallen knights, contact their

families and inform them of their deaths and when the services will be held.

When this is done, report back to me.

He folded the parchment and handed it to a nearby squire "Ensure this

reaches Salinor, when you have delivered it, send for Sehvelarious to meet

me here, I have an assignment for our Lore Master. ".

Sehvelarious was well known for his knowledge of history and lore. Perhaps

this can be put to use in the upcoming deployment.

Camlach ran down the hall way from the library towards the armory

skidding to a stop momentarily to give the Captain's orders to the Lance

Knights he saw. He weaved in and out of the traffic in the hall in his

head-long to do Mercerion's wishes. Coming to the Armory, he scurried from

knight to knight barely waiting for acknowledgement of the Captain's orders

before moving to the next person.

Camlach saw a friend of his from his days slogging horse dung out of the

stalls as a page and called him over. 'Barrick! The Lance Knights are

being mobilized. I need your help. Captain Mammoritai want all the knights

below the rank of Lt. In the formation yard ASAP! ' Barrick nodded his

head and said 'Sure thing. I'll go hit the barracks. ' 'Great! I'll hit

the Temple and Alter room before I go report to Capt. Mamoritai. If you

see Zacharach tell him to hurry up.. He's already on the Capt's bad side

because of the formation. ' was Camlach's reply before the friends parted

to carry out their tasks.

Camlach's hastened steps rang out loudly in the quiet of the Temple proper.

He noticed Sir Battenburg standing near the door speaking in hushed tones to

a Keep Guard and hurried over. Sir Battenburg had just finished his

conversation and was smiling as Camlach stepped up next to him rendering a

salute. He had trained much with Sir Battenburg and felt a sense of

camaraderie with the long staff wielding knight. 'Sir, Captain Mamoritai

requests all Knights of the Lance below the rank of Lt. Report to him on

the parade grounds. ' He recited, keeping his voice formal. He waited for

for Sir Battenburg's response and answered any of the Knights question's he

could before asking leave and continuing his task.

Camlach entered the Temple, relayed his message to the knights within, and

hurried on to the alter room. Upon arriving in the Alter room he bowed his

and offered a small prayer with those assembled before walking amongst them

whispering the Capt. 's orders in the ears of those to whom they applied.

His task as complete as he felt possible, Camlach set off at an all out

sprint for the parade grounds to report to his Knight. Who needed rest he

thought, I've still got adrenaline to run on.

Rain. It had been raining atop Croyden's tower as Salinor stood under

what cover it could offer, only to see the light drops fall upon the bricks

that have stood for ages now. He dusted at his robes, his right side at

first, then his left, as he glanced up into the foreboding sky, streaked

with lightning. He chuckled for a moment as he also heard the interrupter

of peace, the rolling thunder, which followed shortly after each brilliant

flash of light against the darkened clouds.

In this moment of solitude, he thought of the quote the General had asked of

him and smiled because he had already committed those words to memory. It

was often that in these times, he would let his mind stray for only a

moment, to the surroundings around him.

'Rain. ' He thought to himself as he looked down to the stone floors.

'Water to wash away the sorrows. Water to start life anew. ' And with a

smile, he concluded. 'water to heal and mend. '

It was in this moment that his minute of enveloping himself into his own

world of thoughts came to a sudden halt.

'High Clerist.. ' came a voice, sounding almost urgent, from behind the

priest.

Salinor easily turned around and faced the guard that stood at attention and

gave him a brief salute, accompanying it with a smile. 'Hail! ' he said,

in a voice that almost surprised the messenger.

'Sir, words from the Lady Crown. She's asked for all officers to report

immediately to the library. ' As Salinor listened, his attention seemed

drawn to the commotion down below as squires and pages ran back and forth,

carrying in their arms all that they could in terms of supplies, armory, and

weaponry. 'I do not know the full details behind it but it sounded

pressing. '

'I'll be there immediately. ' As he said the words, he began walking to the

stairway leading down into the Keep. He turned only for a moment to notice

the guard still standing in the same place.

'Would you like me to inform your squire? ' He chuckled at the questions

presented to him and shook his head in return while his hands dusted at his

robes again. 'My squire.. Hmm. Do not worry about that. I'll tend to it

too. '

Salinor then gave a nod in dismissal for the guard to carry on before

descending the stairs to the main part of the Keep. He looked around for a

minute at his surroundings before he yelled. 'Rannoch! ' above all the

bustle around him. Somehow, he knew that it would be enough, whether she

was asleep or hiding near him, she would report to him.

With that, he began to walk to the library, all the while watching the

people go about their preparations.

A tendril of light streamed through the window, slipping past the heavy

olive curtains that framed the sprawling landscape. Josephine had enjoyed

this same vista for days, and this morning would likely be no different.

Easing herself from the bed following her morning prayer, the young druidess

made her way to the glass and touched casually upon its cool surface. Her

fingertips traced the dips and turns, as they had done so many times before,

but her eyes could barely decipher soil from sky.

Rain. It blurred the vitreous sheet of glass, swirling the colors of the

earth into an ever-changing work of art that she could not bear to tear her

eyes from for some time. With a faint smile, the squire finally glanced at

her right sleeve while she lowered her hand away from the makeshift canvas.

A thread. She couldnt help but chuckle.

Though whispered, her prayer to the Father led Josephine back home, back to

the safety of the Keep which was already bustling with activity at this

early hour. She spotted the High Clerist from afar and almost made a

beeline for him, but paused upon noticing his ensuing conversation with one

of the guards. Her mentor dusted at his robes after dismissing the guard,

then yelled her name. She had half a mind to yell back but restrained,

choosing to follow discreetly behind him instead.

A gentle tap to the left shoulder, then the right, she hoped it was enough

to get his attention. 'You hollered, High Clerist?'

His reverie was disturbed by a familiar voice.

The lilting tune faded from mind as he glanced up to Camlach, leaning into the

Armory.

" Sir, Captain Mamoritai requests all Knights of the Lance below the rank of

Lt. Report to him on the parade grounds. ", he recited, almost by rote.

Daerten nodded, completing the last of his preparations, his staff the last

thing he picked up. A familiar twirl and sheathing motion and the shimmering

staff was resting in its sling across his back, and he turned, sauntering from

the Armory.

The parade grounds were empty yet.

" Must be getting ready still .. hrmm .. wonder if there'll be anyone in the

Altar Room. Might as well spare a step .. y'never know who you might run

into. "

He grinned to himself, the lilting tune flooding back into this mind.

" There are footsteps in the forest

whose, I cannot see

gardenia scent and grasses bent

all guide me to this tree. "

He entered the Altar Room and glanced about, empty. He settled on the nearest

pew, to wait. His eyes closed to thought, the spell of summon his current focus.

" Never know when that might come in handy, what with those yaeni stranglers

about. "

Footsteps. His eyes snapped open, darting glances about. A bedraggled section

of squires led by a knight walked past. He gestured to a page trailing behind.

" Young man .. ", he began nodding at the page.

The page was breathless, his features set in concern, " Sir .. sir .. hazard

our knights are pressed sore .. Lieutenant Tandan, he sent us for aide. "

Daerten glanced at him, nodded grimly, " And he shall have it. "

A squire entered, Daerten glanced at her, recognition dawning. Shylah, the

Cardinal's squire.

' What was his last position? ', he demanded.

The page's brown furrowed for a moment, " Just outside Pan-toll, sir. We were

" making for the ruins.

Daerten frowned, " The ruins .. eh? Shylah, prepare, we leave immediately

I saw Rithor go by, have him prepare and report here. And Page, find an

officer and pass on the word. Every second is vital. Oh .."

He turned to face the young page, reaching to squeeze his shoulder reassuringly.

" Fear not, young man, our comrades will not stand alone. "

The preparations were swift and hurried, and within minutes, the trio were

heading north, the ruins their goal.

considered it divinely inspired. The soft parchment was wrapped, and

stamp-sealed and given to Vausen Naus.

"You know what to do with that. " Cas'teh Naus suggested.

The other yinn snorted and said taking the parchment," The war of a words

sickens me. You know I prefer to be the only cause of our enemies demise.

"

"Bring your hunger and a something to carve metal from flesh, the meal will

be paladin, " smiled the black furred yinn.

Along the quiet corners of the woods surrounding the ruins were yinn,

waiting for word. They were grouped in twos and threes, moving daily with

the stealth of darkness and were all armed with bows and arrows. The had

one other supply on them. Not food, not water, but oil soaked cloth

awaiting a birthing spark of flint to burn and the wind was just right.

"The knights and 'honor' will fail and they will turn against one another

with this ruse. When they crumble and panic, the order will go out to enter

the ruins, " said Cas'teh Naus handing a bag of flint to Vausen.

"I see now, a great plan. When they move into the ruins, we make our

"approach with favor of the wind and wrap the arrows to be ignited and

then... " Vausen Naus paused and grins as the peices came together.

Slaying knights aflame as they ran chaoticly out of the ruins consumed his

thoughts. He could barely contain a cackle of glee at the anticipated

carnage.

Word had just entered the keep that the advanced unit had arrived safely

at the dig site in Serpantol and Camlach hustled out of the barracks in

search of Captain Mamoritai. After a hasty search of the keep, he realized

Mercerion must be with his family and called a page to him. 'I need you to

take this message to Captain Mamoritai at his house in Althania. Its urgent

you find him quickly! Now Go!. ' The page took off at a run for the Keeps

gate and Camlach made his way to the armory where he had seen several

Knights preparing to ride out to the ruins.

As he entered the armory he noticed Lt. Iolius gathering a patrol to ride

out to the ruins to check on the advanced forces. Near him Sir Battenburg

was readying himself to sally forth as well. 'Sir I'll ride with you. '

Sir Battenburg nodded saying 'Ready yourself Emrys. '

The ride to the ruins was swift and uneventful. Many of the local peasants

came out of their hovels to watch and wave at the progression, fore it had

been a long time since the knight had rode in numbers into the grasslands.

As they neared the southern fortress that was the site of the dig they met

the picket line and identified themselves as what they were. Once past the

pickets the small band of knights and squires approached the gate where the

the defenses had been centered.

While the Lt. Recieved reports from the knights platoon leader, the rest of

the small band explored the ruins and after some time to the battlements.

Camlach gazed out over the lands of the past and day dreamed for a short

time of the knights that saw this same visage many years before. He was

brought back from his thoughts to the sound of Lt. Iolius' sure footed

steps ringing out on the stone floor. 'Take a long look boys for that is

Feeling high spirited, Camlach made his way back down to the gate. There

he met his mentor and hero Mercerion Mamoritai just arrived on a lathered

mount. Camlach hurried to take the reins from the Captain and render a

salute. The Captain smiled at him and said 'Well done Emrys, Thank you for

getting me the notice quickly. ' 'Your Welcome sir. Camlach replied and

led the horse away to the stable to be brushed, watered and fed.

Camlach returned to his knights side when he was finished and stood silently

as the Captain received the news and reports from those present. Thats when

the first howls and yipping could be heard, hearlding the pickets that came

tearing up the slight incline to the center of the line. 'Yinnae raiders

*gasping for breathe* incoming from the east!! ' their sergeant cried as

the joined the ranks of defenders. 'Prepare yourself Emrys. ' the Captain

whispered before begining to shout his orders to the assembled Knights.

The Knights taken by surprise barely made it into defensive formations

before the first Yinnae reached the front rank. Camlach stood near Captain

Mamoritai in the center of the second rank. The sound was deafening as the

initial charge broke on the wall of defenders like a wave upon the shore.

The Knight in front of Camlach fell with to a nasty back swing of a mace to

the helmet and was pulled back by his comrades. Camlach leapt to fill the

breach wielding his hammer and flail. Parrying a blow with his hammer, he

lashed out at his Yinn attacker with his flail which wrapped around his

opponent's sword several times. He kicked out hard into the yinn's chest

throwing it back into its brotheren, his flail still attached the yinn's

blade wrenched from his hand in the process. Camlach barely had enough time

to get his shield on and up to block a vicious downward chop from his new

opponent. He chanced a glance toward Mercerion who was slashing a bloody

swathe through the attackers and did not see the largest of the pack pulling

back on along bow aimed at his chest. Unable to do anything for his mentor,

Camlach said a silent prayer to Nadrik before feinting a strike with his

hammer only to strike with a vicious kick to the knee. As Yinn yowled in

pain, Camlach reversed his feint into a backhanded swing that met his

opponents skull with a sickening crunch. CLANG was all Camlach heard before

he swung from his still falling opponent to see a spent arrow clatter to the

ground at Mercerion's feet. Panic gripped him as he saw Sir Mamoritai

wince, though he continued to fight. Camlach slowly waded through the

fighting towards his Knights postion. Parrying and dodging, swinging and

blocking the months of intense training making it almost reflexive. Seeing

him coming Mercerion yelled Get out of here Emrys! Making his way finally

to his hero's side Camlach answered 'Sir? I can't leave you like this.

Blocking another vicious blow with his shield as he said it.

The fighting continued for what seemed like hours. Camlach and Mercerion

both had recieved numerous wounds in the reletively short span of time that

had passed. 'Emrys go and get some re-enforcements. The captain ordered

after he had disemboweled his current opponent. Yes Sir. Camlach replied

and whistled to his charger who came at a fast canter kicking and biting

yinn all the way. Mounting quickly, He charged through the yinn lashing out

as he went by but doing little real damage. Bursting clear he spurred the

charger into a gallop. With in minutes he had cleared the woods and made it

out on to the plains.

Arriving at the keep, Camlach hurried to the alter room finding Zacharach

there leading some other Lance knights in prayer. The Advance forces are in

danger! Follow me! We must hurry! ' Those present rushed for their

Mercerion's breath was coming in ragged gasps, every muscle in his tired

body burned and ached, not to mention the wounds he had taken from the

blades of the yinn. "Hold the line! Keep in your positions! " Mercerion

shouted commands to his troops as he stood knee deep in the chaos, waiting

and trying to keep his men fighting until his squire returned with

reinforcements.

A charging yinn lept over the knights in front of Mercerion and swung his

sword viciously at him. Mercerion moved swiftly out of the way of the heavy

blade and with one of his own, pinned the Yinn's weapon to the ground, and

with his other blade, tore a deep gash in the Yinn's neck, sending him to

the ground. Mercerion chanced a glance up at the battlements to see where

the arrow that had stuck him had come from, and saw a larger Yaenni on the

battlements, readying another arrow. "Archers, the battlements, FIRE! "

Mercerion shouted and saw the yinn duck from the salvo, and off of the

battlements just in time.

Mercerion heard a cry near him and saw a young cleric forced to the ground

by one of the yinn. The young shield page struck her head hard as she hit

the ground, and the Yinn raised his weapon high, ready to bring it crashing

down upon her. A sharp howl escaped his lips as his arm fell away from his

shoulder, and his weapon clattered uselessly to the ground, followed in

short by the yinn's head as Mercerion swung against his body's momentum from

his first slash, his katana ringing as it struck.

The battle continued to rage, Mercerion shouting commands and keeping his

troops from panicking from the onslaught of the foes. Mercerion's body was

nearly ready to give out however, as he had lost a lot of blood from the

wounds on his arms. His vision began to blur as he struggled to continue

giving commands to the knights.

Suddenly, a loud warcry could be heard, and Mercerion, as well as the Yaenni

leader snapped their heads to see a reinforcement division Gareth, led by

Mercerion's squires Camlach and Zacharach were racing up the road at the

Yinn force's flank. The large yinn grinned toothilly and barked an order,

and the yinn began a full withdrawal into the forests, leaving seven of

their dead behind.

Mercerion fell to a knee as a rousing HUZZAH! Went up throughout the

ruins, breathing hard and trying to keep his focus. Thank You, Lord Nadrik,

for this victory." Mercerion silently prayed as his squires approached.

Both Zacharach and Camlach offered spells of healing to Mercerion, but he

would any take enough of them to keep his focus, prefering to save what

healing potential they had for the other injured knights. "Gather the

wounded and the dead, and bring them hear, " Mercerion said to nearby

knight, who quickly began to do just that. For nearly the next hour,

Mercerion spoke to his knights, wounded or otherwise, while Zacharach and

Camlach tended to them. "A great moral victory, the enemy fallen far

outnumbered the losses of the knights, " Mercerion assessed, as he

approached the body of the lone life taken by the yinn. Mercerion kneeled

at the fallen squire's side and cleaned the blood from his face and wounds.

"Squire duLock" Mercerion whispered, gently closing the squire's still open

eyes. "Lord Nadrik, Squire duLock has served well in Your name in life, and

I pray that he continues to do so beyond life" Mercerion quietly prayed

before standing, and turning to the knights. "The enemy has spilled the

blood of the knights, and they shall know the knight's, and Nadrik's

justice! " Mercerion shouted, raising his blade aloft in a fiery blaze of

holy flames, as the many knights roared and followed suit with shouts and

cheers

known to take long moments before responding to anyone, but this was getting

real long. Already he could feel the burn in his bladder getting stronger.

But still he waited and waited. He stood there as Gwaine sat in silence,

staring off into space, likely some meditation, or was just getting old.

The burn got stronger and Selath began wobbling a bit and crossed his legs

as sweat formed on his brow. In his age this happened frequently and Gwaine

was not helping any. He began dancing a bit as the urge kept getting

stronger and stronger. 'Sir? You re... Request.... Requested me to come?

' He stood there and continued to wait.

Tegyr stood atop the northeast tower, looking out at the sun setting

across the vast forests to the north. A cool breeze blew south, tugging

lightly on his facial fur. He inhaled deeply, filling his lungs with the

cool evening air, almost smelling the blood being spilled in the northern

ruins.

Serpantol. The very word sent a icy chill through the young yinn's spine.

After all these years, swords would once again clash over the sacred grounds

of Serpantol, and old feuds would be reborn. He had been briefed by Sir

Battenburg and the Crown General the day before, their words still fresh in

his mind. It would be a lie to say he was not somewhat alarmed when he read

the parchment. The haunting words still echoed in his mind. He knew what

it meant, and what must be done.

Patience was not this yinn's best virtue. Tegyr yearned to be on the front

lines with the other knights, where he did not have time to mull over such

thoughts. On the battlefield, decisions were simple. Strike and evade,

kill or be killed.

Tegyr breathed deeply again as the sun hid its final rays behind the

horizon. 'Soon,' he said to himself. 'Soon.'

Knights of Gareth:

On this day, upon my arrival to duty, I recieved notice that our troops had

arrived at Serpantol, and immediately departed to join them. I found

Daerten and Camlach with our knights, and fell into formation with them.

Daerten then had to depart, as I relieved him, and shortly after this, a

band of Yaenni raiders arrived, and attacked. I organized a defensive

force, and fought back against them alongside my squires Camlach, and

Zacharach.

We managed to repel the raiders, and slew seven of their warband before they

withdrew. Unfortunately we suffered a loss ourselves, as a youthful squire

by the name of Vectren duLock succumbed to his wounds.

I stand guard here now until which time I am relieved, and can return to

Gareth to resupply.

Sehvelarious stood at the gates of the ruined fortress. He looked north,

towards the unknown whilst rubbing his hands to keep the cold from his aged

bones. The night watch had ensued, and he was used to being alone on it.

But now he was not alone. Knights of Gareth stood with him - and on these

flagstones for the first time in generations.

Just earlier that day the patrol arrived and secured the perimeter. He had

arrived from Gareth and led the knights to the battlements to hang an

ancient and faded standard of Knighthood and Serpantol. Long had he dreamed

of this moment, and it was finally true. He moved from room to crumbling

room, to find anything of historical significance.

Entering the barracks, an tall weapons cabinet stood out as one of the few

objects still standing in the ruin. Sehvelarious slipped his hand up to

feel on top of the cabinet and his hand hit something solid. He tugged at

it and it fell snugly into his hands. It was a book covered in the ancient

runes of Serpantol.

A quick perusal showed most of it in the strange serpentine runes which

filled the cover, but there was some in Common within. He wrapped it up in

skins and put it into his backpack, destined for the library where much

study would be required to unlock the contents held within.

"Lieutenant Iolius," a voice came from the door. "General Sha'fen requires

your presence." General Sha'fen would be very interested in this indeed.

A breathless page came running up to Kloengr as he entered the Keep from

another one of his extended forays in the nearby forest. Kloengr eyed the

page as he neared him, a slight frown began to form on his face.

"Captain Mamoritai left word that when you were found to ask if you know the

way to Serpantol..." , The page spoke in a rush.

To which Kloengr nodded slowly once. "Aye, I do."

The page continued on," Captain Mamoritai calls you into service, squire.

His orders are such: Gather equipment and supplies, specifically those for

scouting through woodlands. You will be scouting for yaenni patrols that

are in the area." , The page paused for a moment as if finished then started

suddenly and added, "You are attached to the Shield for the duration as

well." When the page finished reciting his memorized message he looked

expectantly at Kloengr.

Kloengr nodded once again, then continued on past the page to the vault

room. The page followed. Drawing to short swords, he checked their

sharpness then sheathed them. He then took out a pair of flaming flails,

Kloengr once again grimaced at his lack of axes of raije. Pulling out two

pieces of cloth that were mottled in color, making it difficult for the eyes

to focus on he sheathed the flails themselves with the cloth and set them

aside, not worrying about the cloth burning, a mage had seen to that.

Grunting Kloengr heaved out a large bag, untying the draw string he pulled

out what seemed to be a jumble of vegetation and confusion. He spread it

out and checked it over for rips, tears or anything that wasn't supposed to

be attached. After adjusting a few places and removing a few pieces he

seemed satisfied and donned his ghillie suit. The suit was nothing special

for a ranger, a must for camouflaging, having made it himself Kloengr knew

he could rely on it for this mission as it had all others before it. Next

brought out his bow, a plain and unadorned but well used short recurve. He

quickly strung it and drew it back, then slowly let the tension out.

Gathering up what seemed to be scraps from the ghillie suit Kloengr attached

them at what appeared to be random intervals. Soon the bow looked more like

a strange mossy stick than a bow, albeit a strange mossy stick with a

string. Arrows were now drawn, one by one, each given a quick inspection

before being stowed in Kloengr's hard leather quiver. The page shifted his

weight. Kloengr glanced at him and grunted, "Still here?"

The page stammered, "You didn't... Give an answer, squire"

Kloengr muttered something, which could have been something like "Irritating

little page, hate to think I was ever like that." Of course it could have

been "Irrigation like that, hate to think I ever did that." Speaking

clearly to the page, "Go find Aillran, Chaldmin, Aurus, Vastos and Moin.

Tell them to prepare for an extended woodland patrol in the area of

Serpantol. I will be inspecting them in one hour."

The page nodded quickly several times before dashing of to find the five

other squires.

Kloengr returned to his inspection of the remaining arrows. Satisfied they

would all fly true, he grabbed a pair of daggers and turned to leave with

his gear. Then froze in mid step, turned back to his vault and grabbed two

more daggers of more slender shape. Smiling, he thought to himself 'you

could never have too many blades."

Within an hour and a half the six men melted into the forest at a slow lope

that ate distance but allowed them to scan there surroundings. As they

neared Serpantol, they slowed to a crawl and began their patrol...

The guards at Pan-Toll were on edge, the happenings about had their number

trebled, evidently, someone was taking these happenings serious.

Daerten nodded at the older man, his seniority evident in the manner in which

the other guards deferred to him.

" The Knights, my good man, they were past this way? "

" Aye, sorr .. headed nor' wes they wus. An' they wusnae waitin' fer none. "

Daerten nodded his thanks, gesturing to Rithor and Shylah to follow.

The clop-clop trot of Rithor's steed echoed on the deserted Valley. The

portent of war hung over these lands, and this trail, this trail would soon

widen.

Shylah marched beside him, Daerten glanced to his left, appraising her. They

were young, these squires, and yet, war would show them little mercy. The

two squires bore the march well, little fatigue showed. If the message were

true, and if they were timeous, their strength would be tested.

His murmured incantation to Nadrik was barely audible,

" Lend wings to our heels, my Lord, our comrades face battle dire. "

" Guard these young 'uns, Lord, they fight in your name. "

" Given me strength, Lord, let me me not fail them. "

He raised his hand, swiftly reorganising their formation. Rithor, beside him,

two paces behind, Shylah, holding defensively. Bear and elemental holding his

flanks.

" Slow trot, Rithor. The enemy nears. Shylah, hold your healing ready. "

He murmured encouragement and counsel.

" There will be little room to charge, Squire. Sabre would be best. "

The sounds of the forest stilled, a faint rustling sounded. His keen ear

perked. He cast his gaze about, the breeze quietened to a whisper, his

vision well trained to the forest.

Instinctively he braced, his warning shout echoing as the yinn scouts burst

onto them. Staff shimmered in the twilight, parrying, darting forward from

its pattern to strike.

Bear and elemental closed in on the enemy, Rithor's rousing battle cry

echoing as he galloped past, deadly sabre at the ready. He smiled despite

the hazard, shaking his head. A nod and glance sufficed, for the bear and

elemental, both following Rithor as he swept through the yaeni ranks,

wrecking havoc in their passage, his deadly sabre glittering in the failing

light.

Shylah's reassuring touch on his shoulder, healing, her eyes closed as she

invoked healing blessings. She stood firm in the tumult, a foundation of

faith on which staff and sabre could dance to a deadly melody.

The choked gurgle of the yaeni leader, his throat gashed from one of

Rithor's mounted passes, sounded quietly. The aftermath of the skirmish

sullen in its silence. Daerten glanced to Rithor and Shylah, he nodded

approvingly.

" Shylah .. your healing and Rithor, see to that gash on your mount. "

" We have someways still to the Fort, and we must make speed. "

those in command. I was caught unprepared for this tactic, so I relay it to

you so that you will not be. I do not suggest removing those in command

from their positions, however those in command shoudl ready themselves

against such vile tactics, in case they come into contact with our enemy.

If you are able, fight upon the higher ground, as it limits their ability to

strike with arrows, and lessens their height advantage.

Bolter withdrew a few parchments from his pockets and began looking them

building small fortifications. He assigned a minimum of two platoons for

each caravan to ensure the supply lines were well protected. The Lance

should be moving its main for soon and that should provide further security

He made his way through the keep and dispersed the necessary orders for the

Keelah smiled at Alycee and waved as the felar slumped off toward bed,

exhausted from a long day of hard work. Keelah tried hard not to show that

she had been hard at work all day as well. 'Well, let's see, ' she thought

to herself, 'Lorcas will be okay... At least for now. And I obtained more

for the poor than I had anticipated... Spoke with Alycee about the upcoming

meeting. What next? ' Keelah moved around the church slowly, the hem of

her robe shuffling along the ground. She inspected the room of healing, but

found it clean. She inspected the library, but found it organized. She

inspected the breezeway, but it had been swept. Then, as she went into the

garden, she looked at the position of the sun and slapped herself across the

forehead, open-palm. "Oh Keelah, you silly girl, " this time speaking aloud

to herself, "How could you forget something like that? It'll be the fourth

time today. "

Keelah reentered the church, going into her own quiet corner of the library,

set apart for ceremonies such as this that required a flat surface. She dug

into her satchel and took out two large drawstring pouches. She felt their

weight and sighed. "I shall have to purchase more... And they are so

expensive! But performing this prayer five times per day will do that... "

She set the pouches aside and drew out two flasks of holy water and her holy

symbol of Kadiya. At the very last, she reached up into her hair and

carefully untied the holy dove feather from where it had rested, glowing,

since Kadiya had given it to her.

Keelah took out the first pouch and, with the precision of careful practice

and a hand steadied by many years, created a circle three feet in diameter

with fine powdered silver. She went very slowly, ensuring that the circle

was perfect to the most exacting detail. When she was finished, she set the

pouch aside and took up the other. In the circle, touching the edges every

so slightly, she traced out the holy symbol of Kadiya in powdered pink pearl

dust. When at last she was done her task had taken more than an hour.

Using the first flask of holy water she sanctified and anointed herself.

And then she settled down in the very center of the circle, on her knees.

'Oh mother Kadiya... I apologize for my hesitance and forgetfulness. I...

I simply never thought that I would pray such words in your name. Forgive

me if they anger you, but I feel that they are the conviction that you have

placed upon my heart. ' Keelah used the other flask of holy water to

sanctify her holy symbol, then held it in her right hand and the dove feater

in her left, both of which she held to the sky. And there she unburdened

her heart in prayer.

"Mother Kadiya, lady of peace, soother of the soul and salvation of hurts

deeper than flesh, please hear the cry of your humble servant! Algoron

quakes in terror in these days. Men burst into tears at no provocation,

fathers bury their sons and mothers see their children off to fight. War is

upon Algoron. Mighty Lord Nadrik has seen fit to impress upon the heart of

the one I raised like a son to march off to war as well. Although I

understand not the ways of war, if the gods will it than so be it. Please

protect him and all of the Knights of Algoron. Deliver unto them swift

victory over the evil Yinn against which they now struggle. Let the light

prevail! And my last, though perhaps it should have been my first...

Please stop any undue suffering on either side. If the soul of any creature

be taken, let the taking be swift and painless as the gods allow. Let the

ravages of war not seek the innocent, and may the scars of the victors and

even the vanquished swiftly heal, in body, mind and soul. Please hear the

cries of your child, mother, and may the will of the gods be done. Peace be

to all living things, so be it. "

Keelah let her arms fall, her holy symbol and the dove feather falling from

her hands. Although she had prayed only a short time, she was sweating

profusely, and tears streamed from her eyes.

[337] Camlach: Lux Lucis ap Salus Calm before the Storm

Sat Apr 21 06:29:27 2007

To: all Knighthood Cahlizna Austinian Nadrik Siccara Imm (RP)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The days at the old fort since the skirmish with the raiders had been

quiet. Though that did not mean they had been uneventful. Camlach's back

ached and his hands bore new calluses from his participation in the digging

of the new defensive trenches. His left hand still hurt from the splinter

he'd gotten from carving the stakes that were now placed angled on the

opposite side of the trench. Under Captain Mamoritai's careful supervision,

the advance force had been busy. The squires were being trained to stand in

the lines among the knights since the manning was so low and the opponents

numbers as yet unknown.

The knights and squires had been training hard to perfect the Captain's

defensive formation plan. The pikemen had quickly picked up the planed

withdraw behind the second rank after they had broken the first charge. The

purposed second rank of swordsman/shieldman teams was coming together a bit

slower. While used to depending on one another in battle, it was proving

more difficult the pairs to move cohesively as one. The first day was a

disaster. One squire being slashed badly in the arm when he had

accidentally moved the wrong direction during a exercise as a shieldman.

Zacharach easily mended the poor young mans arm but damage to the training

had been done. The shieldmen moved timidly in the training sessions and the

swordmen, worried that they might injure one of their own were less

aggressive. This had gotten only a little better as the days had passed.

Camlach had elected to be a shield bearer and had trained hard to be the

best he could be. The incident had not be lost on him though, he did not

leap as close to his sword bearer nor as quickly. Caution and self

preservation though were not the motivation for why he went to see the

Captain that day. Camlach found him where he normally did, leaning against

the wall near the gate gazing over the field on which the battle would one

day soon take place. Sir? Calach ventured. Yes Camlach? Mercerion

replied. Camlach took a deep breath and then said in a bit of a rush Sir, I

would like to be your shield bearer. Its not anything to do with Sir

Berevinian, he is a great swordsman, I just would rather serve at your side

sir. Mercerion gave Camlach the approving smile that Camlach found himself

going out of the way to receive from his mentor and hero. I think we can

find another squire for him. However you are going to have to train three

times as hard. We need to show the rest of the men how it should be done.

That accident has slowed our progress to a stand still. If you want to be

my shield bearer you have to give over your fears and trust Lord Nadrik to

guide you around and between my strokes. Mercerion went on. All Camlach

could returned was a solemn Yes sir.

[343] Mercerion: Lux Lucis ap Salus (The Light of Salvation) Practice makes perfect.

Mon Apr 23 23:47:01 2007

To: All Knighthood Austinian Nadrik Sicarra Cahlizna Immortal (RP)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The early morning air was chilled, and Mercerion could see his breath

coming and going in the dawn's crimson display. He quickly looked over the

scene before him, and smiled. All of his men were out in the defensive

trenches, most of them beginning to tire from the drills, but they had made

significant progress in their practicing the defensive strategy. "They move

with confidence now. Their fears of being struck by their comrades has

begun to slip away. " Mercerion thought to himself as he stood right near

Camlach.

Mercerion continued his gazing to make sure everything was as it should be,

and ready to practice one more time. Mercerion nodded to himself, and gave

a loud shout, "Yaenni Raiders, First line, Stand ready! " The pikemen

readied their pikes in anticipation, holding their breath.... Waiting for

the next command. Mercerion's voice cut the cold air like a knife through

butter, "First rank, Fall back! Second rank, Shields! "

The pikemen left the positioned pikes angling out to slow the invisible

charge, and scurried up behind a line of knights, who simultaneously linked

their shields in a wall at the edge of their trench. Mercerion stood behind

Camlach, measuring in his mind a force of oncoming yinn, rushing to the 4

foot trench, covered by three foot interlocking shields. The only way they

would pass it, would be to jump. "Pikeman, ready against the charge!

Second line, Strike! " Mercerion's words again cut through the air, and the

knights responded immediately. The pikemen readying 8 foot pikes over the

shield wall to stop the leaping yinn, while the Shield wall pulled back

nearly simultaneously, and a knight behind them with swords drawn, struck

where the shield had been not even a second before, only to be immediately

replaced by the shield.

Mercerion quickly darted from side to side, narrowly missing Camlach with

his strikes. His practiced strikes landing where a Yinn's head or chest

would be with each strike. They were learning... They could hold the yinn

with this strategy. Each knight striking with trust that his companion

would not flinch into the path of the blade. Each shieldman moving and

trusting his companion swordsman. The pikeman holding fast to keep the yinn

from jumping the line.... It coul d work. It would certainly hold against

raiding parties... And it would have to, until Gareth could be mustered in

full.

Mercerion called off the drills so his men could rest, and volunteered for

the first shift. As he stood near the gates, leaning against the wall, his

thoughts began to wander towards his family, to his friends, and then back

to Gareth. "I hope Renetar and la Bellas can have them ready soon. These

Yinn won't toy with us forever. " Mercerion thought to himself, gazing out

towards Gareth. Mercerion sat with his thoughts, gently clasping his holy

symbol, watching... Waiting for anything to happen.

[344] Leumas: Lux Lucis ap Salus (The Light of Salvation) - Scouts in the Forest

Tue Apr 24 10:44:48 2007

To: Knighthood All ( Immortals Cahlizna Nadrik Austinian Siccara RP )

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Leumas had an advantage that equaled the Yinn familiarity with these

lands in general in that he had specific knowledge of these lands. How many

months had stretched into years while he had been on pilgrimage in these

forests and ruins. Three years he had lived these lands. Three years he

and his men and studied and searched and dug and plotted and mapped the

places that used to be roads and homes and temples.

They were still miles off from the main dig sight that was the Knight's main

fortification, but there was no doubt that the raiding and scouting parties

of yinn were carefully, inexorably moving towards the location of the tomb.

Such as this pair in front of him now.

He had at first followed them at a distance for a couple of miles since he

spotted them near the main sight moving away from the Knight's encampment.

He noted that they were heading in the direction of a bottleneck in the

valley that would then turn north a few miles back towards the yinn lines.

So skirting wide and around the pair he pushed his warhorse down a faint

hunting trail that led to the same location.

He had made enough time that he dismounted and was able to piece together

his field plate, really mostly chain but with a breastplate, pauldrons, and

his helm and remount without the aid of a lift that full plate would have

required.

The pair of yinn would round the bend soon.

He looked down at his shield, unmarred regardless of how many times he had

seen battle. The Shield of Righteousness was likewise a relic of ancient

times. Passed down through the ages until it had been bestowed upon the

once Champion of Austinian. How often had it stopped attacks that would

have battered or shattered asunder a different, lesser ward? How too would

this new relic help Knighthood he wondered. The opportunity to find such

things was far and few between and in the coming wars every reminder of why

they needed to keep fighting even in the darkest days was a boon to him, his

lady Crown, and the men who served under the banners of Gareth.

He pulled from his saddlebags the blue and white tunic that Gwynn had given

him upon his return to the Keep from his last pilgrimage and draped it over

his armor. It was too bright to wear when one was scouting forces but the

cross emblazoned on the front was more than just a symbol of his

paladinhood. It drew the eye of the opponent and thus the attacks of the

opponent to the thickest crested part of the breastplate beneath thus

ensuring blades and arrows alike would be turned aside down the slope of the

metal.

He saw movement in the trees ahead.

His enemies would be dismounted, and so given the circumstances, the laws of

chivalry would demand that he too fought dismounted. In combat earnest he

would have remained horsed but with only a pair of the yinn approaching he

would yield that advantage to ensure what was about to ensue would be fair.

He carried with him an arsenal of weaponry that was befitting his station.

Footman's lance, a hand and a half sword at left hip, his favored war hammer

on his belt loop, and if all else failed a dagger on his right.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

They had killed his lieutenant.

Officers were not to be targeted opponents. Such were the measures that

civil war stated, but still officers were targeted. He doubted Tandan would

have surrendered in any case but it still mattered little to Leumas. His

best scout had been killed. Justice needed to be served and these two

scouts approaching would be the start of the slate that needed cleaning.

The two yinn came through the brush and saw him immediately. Hard not to

with the bright royal blues and whites he wore. Moreover the reacted

quickly and without much surprise. Bows snapped up and hands went to

quiver. So much for chivalry thought Leumas as he brought his targe up and

to the right and started moving forward.

HISSSSSSCLANG! The first arrow ricocheted off the shield face. Leumas spun

to the right and put a tree between himself and the two yinn.

HISSSSSSPFFFFT! A second arrow tore through some of the leaves and branches

that protected the paladin.

Leumas continued his spin around to the other side of the tree wildly

heaving his lance like a spear. If he was lucky he'd hit home but the plan

was really more to force the two scouts to have to stop shooting if only for

a moment while he continued to close the gap. Luck wasn't with him in

regards to the hid and he noted the two yinn had continued moving just as he

had. The pair was experienced. They knew not to stay in one place for too

long.

They didn't know they faced one of Austinian's and Nadrik's chosen. Leumas,

like most of his brethren was never truly unarmed but the two yinn saw only

a knight without a weapon, so took a stationary stance and their time aiming

arrows while the paladin raised his hand towards the yinn on the left.

Steel was but an extension of the paladin, their truth weapon was their

faith. So it was that before the scouts could react a blinding ray of light

shot forth from Leumas' palm and caught the first of the yinn square in the

chest and face.

The yinn died without having time to even scream.

The second loosed its arrow and struck Leumas in the chest near his left

shoulder. His shield held to his arm but bringing it up to his body would

likely tear the muscle and do more damage, so he let it fall to the ground

while unhooking his war hammer from his belt. The hand and a half sword was

a graceful weapon but without his left arm to use it he lacked the strength

to show grace. The distance was now all but closed so the last of the yinn

threw his bow to the ground and drew a short blade. It snarled something in

its guttural language and leapt at the knight. Leumas batted aside the

short sword with the claw end of his hammer and reversed his swing catching

the yinn on the side of the head. Having staggered his foe, Leumas kicked

his armored boot into the front of the scout's kneecap, feeling the bone

shatter. The now unarmed yinn dropped to one leg and glared at Leumas in

defiance.

"Yield. " The knight stated instinctively.

His foe spat on the ground and growled something in its own tongue again

then said in broken common, "Would you? "

"No I suppose I wouldn't. " replied Leumas. The yinn continued to glare at

the knight the entire time that he pulled back his hammer and brought it

down quickly and fatally upon the yinn's head smashing its skull and killing

it instantly. Not once did it flinch. Would that such courage not be

wasted on misguided souls.

The paladin searched over the two felled foes and noted a residue on the

quivers of the pair. Touching it and bringing it to his nose he could smell

the pungent odor of oil. He upended the quiver and soaked rags fell from

the case... Flammable oil soaked rags and arrows.

He had wasted most of the day following the pair of yinn away from the

encampment... Away.

Alarmed, Leumas turned and studied the skyline back towards the

fortification. The trees here blocked most of the view but through the

openings in the branches the unmistakable black of smoke could be seen

rising to the heavens.

The yinn had set fire to the camp.

Leumas reached up and yanked the arrow from his shoulder, laying a hand over

the now bleeding wound. Warmth flooded the limb as he whispered a prayer to

the Father and within moments the hole had closed. Picking up both the

lance and dropped shield, the Knight whistled for his warhorse, the white

steed, clydesdale by appearance but mentally bonded to him as a paladin,

came instantly.

"We must fly. Go. " Having given the command the horse jumped into a

gallop. Secrecy be damned. The miles would close fast and Leumas would see

the full extent of what damage these scouts were causing.

At first noone noticed the fires. Then noone noticed how they had gotten

started. Then it no longer mattered. Though they did not know it, the

scouts that had been advanced to fire the camp had already faded back into

the forest. Even now somewhere else in the trees a Colonel had engaged a

pair of the raiders. It would still be a few minutes before that fight

would reach its conclusion and he would begin his race back.

But in the here and now Rhed had his hands full.

The smoke came thick and black. Whatever oil the yinn were using to cause

the fire was especially retardant to efforts to put it out and made the most

awful brackish clouds that he had ever seen. Of course at first the knights

had tried to use water to put out the fires... Individual groups at first

not realizing that there had been multiple blazes set at various locations.

As these efforts not only failed but caused the globules of thick flaming

oil to spread faster across the water, the cries for aid begin to rise and

the extent of the problem became more widely known.

At least 10 separate fires were now being reported, and had to be fought by

throwing dirt onto the fires. Easy enough to do when the blazes were on

level ground, not so easy when you were trying to get dirt to stick to a

vertical surface like a flaming wall. The young shield Knight was doing his

best to aid, but one could only stand so close to the clouds of smoke before

the hacking started. It was thick enough to chew he imagined. And the

heat...

Most of the buildings thankfully were stone so it would be some time before

they truly caught blaze. One of the fires had actually burned itself out,

the oil being consumed before the stonework, but contrary to popular belief

stone buildings could catch on fire eventually. Especially ones that held

remnants of paint or pitch.

Or worse yet... Books.

In these ruins remarkable things lay hidden. Relics of the past. Things

like this orb were rare, but there were more common artifacts around. Ties

to Knights of yore. Murals, glyphs, tablets. Things that were not holy or

protected by magic were no less important to the mind of the Knight.

History was no less important, and here history was being burned away as

tablets cracked under the heat of the flames... As painted murals

evaporated, blackened beneath clouds of smoke.

Rhed threw another shovelful of dirt onto the blaze he was feverishly

working on. Fighting to stifle the cough he could feel but at the same time

anxious to exhale the lungful of toxic smoke he was about to hack back up.

It would be a great time for the yinn to attack thought the knight with

morbid strategy as he noted all the knights that were now needed to fight

fires instead of watch the lines.

The carriage rocked back and forth as the horses pulled it along the

trail. Looking back he could see the long train of supply wagons following

in behind him. Each one carrying much needed food, weapons and building

materials for fortifications to protect against yinn invasion. He nodded

with a bit of satisfaction that the supply run has been quiet so far.

Looking ahead, the trail winded out in front of him, they did not make as

good of time as he had initially hoped for as they went through the forest

they were forced to stop on several occasions to cut away at limbs that

snagged on the wagons. Ahead of him, the forest began to clear out and turn

into grassland, while Ahead of him, the forest began to clear out and turn

into valley, while quite beautiful, this place was cursed he could feel it

deep in his core. Looking around he noticed the knights around him felt it

as well as the clutched their weapons tighter, many offering pray to their

gods, and hoping the curse of the valley did not prevent their gods from

hearing it.

The trees faded from view as they entered the grasslands, and already he

could hear the roar of the lions around him.

A deafening roar filled the air, followed quickly by a scream of pain and

then silence. Looking quickly in the direction of the roar, he could see

three lions setting upon the still body of a Shield Knight. Other Knights

moved quickly against the lions with their weapons drawn and chased them

away from the now lifeless corpse. A second roar filled the air followed by

a third and fourth as lionesses began converging on the wagons.

'To arms! ' a Shield captain screamed out as knights drew their weapons and

formed a defensive line around the convoy.

'Strange how these lions would attack as such, normally they would hunt

antelope or other wild game. Perhaps their hunger gets the best of their

senses.

The lions charged in met with heavy blows from shield, sword and mace.

Cries of death could be heard from the creatures as the fell, screams of

pain could be heard from knights as they were set upon. Bolter ordered the

wagons to a full stop and dismounted from his carriage. He joined with a

formation nearby and readied his mace and shield as three lionesses

approached. They struck with speed and strength, the knights were barely

able to move swiftly enough to counter their strike. A sword caught one in

the chest as a mace struck another across the skull. The third set upon a

knight a few yards away. He extended his hand to the lion and uttered pray

for holy flame as a fireball leapt from his palm and engulfed the lioness

killing her in seconds.

The attack lasted but a moment, but as in all battles, it seemed like a

lifetime, unfortunately, for a few, it ended their lifetime.

'Gather our dead together and hold a short ceremony for the fallen. Place

them in wagon and return them to the keep, put the supplies out of that

wagon into others. '

A Lieutenant nodded and left quickly to carry out her orders.

Though they were but a day from the ruins, this attack cost them valuable

time. The ceremony complete and the wagon carrying the dead sent back to

Gareth, they started up the path once more, this time a haze could be seen

rising far off on the horizon.

[352] Kloengr: Lux Lucis ap Salus (Patrol)

Fri Apr 27 23:54:16 2007

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kloengr's patrol was formed into a diamond shape as it ghosted the woods.

Aillran was on point constantly scanning and listening for signs of the

enemy. Chaldmin and Aurus were on the flanks, checking behind themselves

every several steps. Moin took up the rear of the formation, scanning the

area behind the patrol every few steps. Kloengr was in the center where he

could best control the formation. Moin was five paces behind Kloengr with

bow strung and an arrow knocked. The patrol continued for several hours

without any sign of the enemy. Several times Kloengr called short security

halts, using hand and arm signals to avoid giving away their position, to

allow the patrol to listen, smell or see the enemy. The day worn on and

eventually grew dimmer as it turned to night. Kloengr allowed the patrol to

continue for a few hours into the night, then called a halt and set up a

perimeter, pairing up the men in the patrol so they could get sleep while

the other was on watch. Twice during the night the patrol changed

positions, setting up again to sleep for a few hours each time.

Aillran raised a fist and the patrol froze, he then motioned for the patrol

to get down. Without moving rapidly the patrol faded into the forest.

Aillron looked back at Kloengr and gave the hand and arm signal for enemy in

sight, three-hundred paces, company size element. Kloengr nodded and made

sure the rest of the patrol was informed. Aillran took out a wide strip of

leather and began writing down what he was seeing. When Aillran was

finished he nodded at Kloengr, who nodded back and motioned for them to set

in, just in case they had scouts on checking the flanks of the column.

Several tense minutes passed as the patrol waited. Just as Kloengr was

about to motion for the patrol to resume Aillron again signed 'enemy in

sight'. Kloengr grimaced and the patrol stayed in position. Another

several minutes dragged by. Kloengr cocked an eyebrow at Aillron in

question, Aillron nodded and gave the all clear. Kloengr gave the signal

for move out, the patrol slowly rose and resumed it's mission.

Late in the day Aillran again raised his fist and the patrol froze, instead

of motioning for the patrol to get down he punched his fist out from his

waste out back and forth several times, the signal for a hasty ambush. He

then gave the enemy numbers and distance in hand and arm signals to Kloengr,

fifteen enemy at one-hundred paces. Kloengr nodded, motioned the patrol

together and outlined what he wanted as they dropped their packs.. The

outlining took only a few seconds as they had all trained together for such

instances, it was more to be absolutely certain every man knew his part in

the ambush. Chaldmin, Moin and Aurus strung their bows and took up position

with Vastos. Aillran and Kloengr checked their weapons, unsheathed their

swords and slowly crept forward. The yinn moved through the forest at a

slow walk in the opposite direction than the yinn that had been spotted

before, talking to each other quietly in their own language, none watched

their surroundings. They were heavily armed and armored, who would want to

attack such great warriors as they? They would soon crush the pathetic

Knights of Gareth. Such was the talk amongst themselves. Aillran and

Kloengr reached their position and waited for the patrol of yinn to enter

the kill zone for the rangers ambush. The yinn walked blithely into the

kill zone. As soon as the middle of group of yinn were well into the kill

zone Chaldmin, Moin, Aurus and Vastos let loose their arrows. Suprise was

total as each arrow found its mark in the unprotected throat of four

seperate yinn, two from either end of the group of yinn. None got more than

a gurgle out before they died thrashing on the ground as they choked on

their own blood. (cont)

The rest of the yinn froze where they were as they goggled at their

thrashing soon to be dead comrades. Another flight of arrows flew from the

four knights sending another four yinn to their gods. The remaining seven

yinn turned and charged the archers howling with rage as they drew their

swords and axes. The archers kept their cool, drawing another arrow from

their quivers, knocked and drew back for another volley. Harder targets

now, the archers did not bother for such difficult shot as the throat, they

now aimed center mass and released. Two arrows were outright deflected by

the heavy yinn plate mail, one penetrated and snapped from the impact

without causing any real damage, the final arrow hammered through the armor,

dropping the yinn before he could take another step, his heart ruptured.

The now six yinn continued their charge, craving vengance on the knights

that had slain their fellows. Kloengr and Aillran erupted from their

concealment slashing their swords at the leading yinn's heads, which were

shortly seperated from their bodies still snarling their hate as they flew.

The bodies continued a few steps before falling. The last four yinn fell

victim to panic as they realized they were now outnumbered. The now leading

yinn attempted to slam to a halt, the others were to close behind him to

stop from becoming entangled with each other and slammed into the ground.

Rather than rush in and kill the currently helpless yinn Kloengr spoke," You

may surrender or you may continue to fight and die honorably, yinn."

The archers had another volley of arrows knocked and drawn, aimed at yinn

heads. As the yinn struggled to their feet one spat and they lunged forward

at the knights again. Kloengr grimaced and wondered if he should have said

'please', as the four heads snapped back when the arrows hit them. Chaldmin

and Vastos drew another arrow each, knocked and moved out to set outer

security. The rest of the patrol moved among the still twitching corpses

search each one for anything that would provide information, coins and other

valuables were noted and left untouched. Moin removed a scroll from the

pouch of one corpse and handed it to Kloengr. The scroll seemed to be

humming, suspecting magic and not trusting his strength in such he stowed it

in his pack.

A shrill bird song echoed through the woods, trouble. Kloengr looked up

sharply in the direction it came from. Vastos signaled that he heard enemy

closing and by his urgency of motion it sounded like a lot of them. Nodding

at Vastos he signaled to Vastos and Chaldmin to regroup and prepare to move

out on the double. The rest of the patrol threw on their packs and began

moving back into the woods at a fast, but almost silent walk. Just as

Vastos and Chaldmin reached their packs the chorused howls of many yinn

filled the woods. They weren't going to get away without slowing the

pursuing yinn down somehow, the chasing yinn had rangers of their own and

would hunt them down now. The noise increased as the yinn rangers picked up

the knight's scent. The leading element broke into a run.

Kloengr spoke to Vastos, "Break contact, pass the word." Vastos nodded and

ran to pass the word. Kloengr quickly and calmly strung his bow as Chaldmin

took up a position several paces away. By the time Kloengr had knocked and

drawn his first arrow Chaldmin had released and dropped the most eager

ranger in the very front, one-hundred paces away. Kloengr released and

dropped the next most eager yinn, who also happened to be a ranger. As soon

as their arrows were away Kloengr and Chaldmin were sprinting in the

direction the others had gone. Sensing that their enemy was running scared

the yinn picked up their pace again, the rangers in their lighter armor

increasing the distance between the other yinn with heavier armor. Chaldmin

and Kloengr raced past Vastos and Moin who already had arrows knocked and

drawn. (cont)

Chest and another through the eye shot, before they too sprinted in the

direction the rest of the patrol had gone.

As they ran Moin smirked and said to Vastos," Showing off again? Or were

you aiming for the other eye?" Vastos grunted and replied," Maybe if you

spent more time at the range than playing with bears you would know the

difference."

Aurus cocked an eyebrow as he heard Moin laughing as he ran past his

position and frowned as he thought to himself 'that man has some serious

issues if he thinks this is fun... ' A second later he and Aillran released

their arrows. The knights repeated the process of shooting and running

towards their direction of movement until the last of the rangers was down.

None of the heavily armored yinn were within even a hundred paces of the

final yinn ranger corpse. The last pair of archers whistled a shrill warble

and sprinted away. As they caught up with the rest of the patrol, they

slowed and concentrated with the others. A cough and roar sounded nearby

and a bear came charging towards the patrol. Vastos cursed, while Moin

grinned as he turned looked into the bears eyes. The bear slammed to a

halt, then gave a whuff and turned back the way it came.

Still grinning Moin turned to Vastos and said, "Maybe if you spent more time

in the forest than throwing sticks that wouldn't happen..." Vastos muttered

something under his breath. The knight's chuckled as they began sprinting

again, now in a different direction than before. The sounds of roars and

screams sounded shortly after in the direction of the pursuing yinn.

Several hours later the knight's had resumed their patrol in the same

formation as before. When night fell Kloengr sent Moin and Vastos to head

back to the camp to report on enemy movements and to hand over the scroll.

The two set out as the patrol moved out in a different direction. As

Kloengr watched them go he reminded himself how lucky they had been so far

that everything had gone well, but they couldn't count on that for much

longer. The patrol faded into the forest once again.

Vastos muttered something under his breath.

The knight's chuckled as they began sprinting again, now in a different direction than before.

The sounds of roars and screams sounded shortly after in the direction of the pursuing yinn.

Several hours later the knight's had resumed their patrol in the same formation as before. When night fell Kloengr sent Moin and Vastos to head back to the camp to report on enemy movements and to hand over the scroll. The two set out as the patrol moved out in a different direction. As Kloengr watched them go he reminded himself how lucky they had been so far that everything had gone well, but they couldn't count on that for much longer. The patrol faded into the forest once again.
