The Lance and the Shield (Current Policies)
Each squire must decide how they will best serve at the end of their squire-ship. The Shield Knights are responsible for the protection of the body of Gareth: her Knights, her Relics and her Lore. They are looked upon to act as the spiritual leaders of Knighthood. The Order of the Lance is deeply rooted in the militant tradition of Knighthood - these Knights represent the combat elite of Gareth.
Consideration for promotion within Shield Order is extended to all Knights of the Shield. Those who have demonstrated a keen intellect, wisdom, skill at teaching and or offering counsel to their fellow knights may be recommended by a current Officer of the Shield, or by a senior officer of the Crown.
Consideration for promotion to the Lance will be extended by invitation only. Those Knights who have demonstrated a keen understanding of survival, rescue and attack may be recommended by a current Officer of the Lance, or by a senior officer of the Shield or Crown. Following recommendation, the Lance General or Colonel may extend invitation to the Knight and assign his mentor.
To begin the Tasks of Entrance, the squire will first be assigned his mentor by the Order's General or Colonel. Any tasks completed without the guidance of a mentor will be repeated.
Tasks of Entrance (Shield)
* Undergo and pass an equipment inspection by an Officer of the Lance.
* Accumulate 2 bounty points, or personally kill 1 enemy of Gareth Keep and record their passing.
* Gather 2 Amulets of Austinian, or other equally helpful pieces of gear for donation to Gareth Keep.
* Write either a Treatise for public consumption, or an Essay to be shared with your mentor and the Generals, on an agreed upon topic of importance.
* Confer with an a member of the Lance or Crown, and then report to your mentor on the best methods of personal self defense you have learned and how to put them into action.
Tasks of Entrance (Lance)
* Undergo and pass an equipment inspection by an Officer of the Lance.
* Accumulation of 10 bounty points, or participate in two separate combat patrols that fall an enemy of the keep.
* Participate in one successful keep defense or assault.
* All Aspiring Knights must know directions to the safe room and the Lords rooms in Misery and Thorn Keep.
* Confer with an a member of the Lance or Crown, and then report to your mentor on the best methods of personal self defense you have learned and how to put them into action.
Note: Where required, the Officers and Knights involved in each task are to provide confirmation by missive. The Candidate must copy the confirmation missives into his journal.
Candidacy for Officer Status
To be a Candidate for an Officer in your order you must meet the following Criteria. Display leadership potential. This includes participation in Keep events, having taken at least one Squire, and being a continually productive member of the Keep. Been Knighted for at least 4 weeks. Have donated consistently to Gareth Keep and Althainia, in either time or funds. Be known as a charitable person. Have no outstanding disciplinary matters before the Generals or High Justice.
Once recognized under these criteria, the General of your Order will assign you to your taskings.
Officer of the Lance:
Accumulate at least 20 bounty points, or personally kill 5 enemies of Gareth Keep and record their passing.
Lead at least 2 successful Keep assaults or defenses (success is defined by gaining or retaining the Keep in question)
Teach a class on the basics of survival to the other Knights, Pages and Squires of Gareth Keep.
Retrieve a Lance of Hemskoen, or other piece of important gear for donation to the needful of the keep.
Officer of the Shield:
Accumulate at least 10 bounty points, or personally kill 2 enemies of Gareth keep and record their passing.
Write an essay on a previous or currently serving Knight of Gareth Keep, list why their deeds and acts are important and then submit this record to the Crown for preservation.
Teach a class on religion and it’s importance to Gareth Keep to other Knights, Pages and Squires.
Be active and respectful of all. Hold all duties expected of a Shield Knight.
A candidate for Office in either Order may be assigned additional tasks at the discretion of their General, to ensure their quality and knowledge.
Promotion:
Promotion beyond the Office of Lieutenant will be upon the merits of each person and the availability of posts in each Order.
The General of each Order will decide their staffing needs.
To be qualified for promotion the Officer must meet these requirements.
The Officer must have served their current post for at least 4 weeks to be eligible for promotion.
The Officer must not have any outstanding disciplinary measures before the Generals or High Justice.
The Officer must have brought at least one of their Squires to Knighthood.
The Officer must not be undergoing any specialized training at the time, all training towards special schools must be completed before consideration for promotion.

* Take one page to squire. Mentor the squire through his tasks to Knighting.
* Donate one egg to the clan's coffers.
* Undergo and pass an equipment inspection by an Officer of the Lance.
Tasks of Entrance
Knight of the Shield:Clerist
* Accumulation of 2 bounty points.
* Obtain the following items:
- a ring of your choice from the Shi'ku Noria
- a white-gold wedding band.
* Hold two sermons on the following subjects:
- The tenets of the Trinity
- The virtues of Knighthood.
Knight of the Shield:Guardian
* Accumulation of 6 bounty points.
* Obtain the following items:
- a ring of your choice from the Shi'ku Noria
- a sapphire ring.
* Conduct one lecture and discussion on Gunnar's Sacrifice.
* Compose one original work (song, poetry or prose), detailing an event within the keep.
Knight of the Lance
* Accumulation of 10 bounty points.
* Obtain one of the following items: a hammer of justice or a jeweled dagger
as specified by the mentor.
* Perform satisfactorily in four duels against another Knight or approved
opponent as designated by the mentor.
* Participate in one successful keep defense or assault.
* All Aspiring Knights must know directions to the safe room and the Lords
rooms in Misery and Thorn Keep.
* Aspiring Knights must lead two combat patrols that fall an enemy of the
Keep.
These tasks are to be monitored by mentoring Knight, and reviewed by an
officer of the Lance. To begin their training for the Lance a Knight must
have squired one member of the Keep to Knighting.
Final Task
* The General and/or Colonel will interview the candidate and assign a final task.
Note: Where required, the Officers and Knights involved in each task are to provide confirmation by missive. The Candidate must copy the confirmation missives into his journal.
Selection for the Officer Corps
Following a suitable term of service to the Keep (minimum four weeks), the Knight may be extended an invitation to begin tasks for a position of leadership. The Knight will then be assigned his mentor by the Order's General and Colonel and may begin the following tasks. Any tasks completed without the guidance of a mentor will be repeated.
Tasks for Officer Candidacy
* All candidates must demonstrate the ability to lead and teach others the route through the Gypsy Camp to recover a ring of the Gypsy King.
* Donate a minimum of one egg to the clan's coffers.
Lieutenant of the Shield:Clerist
* Accumulation of 2 bounty points.
* Obtain the following items:
- a ball of brilliance
- a finely crafted mithril bracer.
* Mentor a Knight of the Shield into the Shield:Clerists.
* Present the tenets of their patron deity to three like followers from outside the Keep.
* Hold two sermons on the following subjects:
- The tenets of their patron deity
- The tenets of all deities of the Light.
Lieutenant of the Shield:Guardian
* Accumulation of 10 bounty points.
* Obtain the following items:
- a ray of hope
- a jeweled bracer.
* Mentor a Knight of the Shield into the Shield:Guardians.
* Conduct a lecture and discussion on the Curse and Cleansing of the Temple.
* Compose one additional original work detailing an event within the keep.
Lieutenant of the Lance
* Accumulation of 15 bounty points.
* Obtain the following items:
- the treasure guarded by the Great Black
- a fire dagger or a flaming flail (as specified by the mentor).
* Mentor a Knight of the Shield into the Lance.
* Demonstrate the ability to navigate Thorn and Misery Keeps.
* Teach a minimum of four classes in basic survival.
Final Task
* The General and/or Colonel will interview the candidate and assign a final task.
Promotion as an OfficerFollowing a suitable term of service as an Officer (minimum four weeks), the Knight may be extended an invitation to begin tasks for promotion. A mentor will be assigned by the Order's General and Colonel and the Lieutenant may begin the following tasks. Any tasks completed without the guidance of a mentor will be repeated.
Tasks for Promotion
* All candidates must demonstrate the ability to lead and teach others the route through the Hellmouth to recover a crown of power.
* Donate a minimum of one egg to the clan's coffers.
Captain of the Shield:Clerist
* Accumulation of 2 bounty points.
* Obtain the following items:
- a coral bound cloak
- the darkstaff.
* Host one gathering to honor their patron deity of with least five individuals from outside the Keep in attendance.
* Hold two sermons.
The topic is at the Lieutenant's discretion, but must be approved by the Colonel and General.
Captain of the Shield:Guardian
* Accumulation of 14 bounty points.
* Obtain the following items:
- a sandshark skin cloak
- a staff of paradox.
* Conduct a lecture and discussion on a key point in Gareth's History. The topic of discussion is at the Lieutenant's discretion, but must be approved by the Colonel and General.
* Compose one additional original work detailing an event within the keep.
Captain of the Lance
* Accumulation of 20 bounty points.
* Obtain the following items:
- the treasure guarded by the Great White
- a bolt of lightning or a pitch quartz polearm (as specified by the mentor).
* Demonstrate the ability to navigate the Citadel.
* Win three duels against other Knights as designated by the mentor.
* Conduct four Readiness Inspections of Lance Knights.
Final Task
* The General and/or Colonel will interview the candidate and assign a final task.
