Care and Training of a Squire

A Knight's Guide to Mentoring Squires

A Knight will act as teacher, guide, brother and friend to his Squires,

from the Page's final task to that time when his Squire kneels for the

last time to arise a Knight of Gareth Keep.

The bond shared between a Squire and his Mentor grows during the Squire's

service and will last throughout his life. Many Knights call on their

mentors for advice or guidance long after they have left the duties of

a Squire behind.

The first duty a Knight has to his Squire is to assign a suitable task to

end his service as a Page. The task must challenge the Page while keeping

his abilities and expertise in mind. An Officer must be consulted to approve

an appropriate task.

Following the completion of the task and acceptance as a Squire, the

Knight must notify the Keep of his new charge and see that the Squire's

uniform is updated.

Uniform insignia requirements:

<Squire's Full name>, Squire to <Name of Knight>

<Squire's Full name>, {BSquire{x to {B<Name of Knight>{x

The mentoring Knight will act as both teacher and guide to his Squire,

leading his charge through each task. The Squire should not begin his

tasks independently, instead the mentor will assign each to his Squire.

The Squire must continue to maintain his journal, recording each task as

it is assigned and completed. Tasks that are not documented in the journal

will be repeated before the Squire will be considered for advancement.

The Knight should write the generals weekly with a brief notice updating

them of the progress of their Squire.

The tasks are listed below with the responsibilities of each. Suggestions

as to how the task may be approached with the Squire are included. The

Knight is free to take the approach that will best suit his Squire.

Col./Gen: Missive following that meeting.

Squire: Journal entry - Honor.

Knight: Help your Squire come to understand the Knight's commitment to

our Virtues. Use the Dilemmas from our Library to help him come to his

own resolution where one or more virtue may come into conflict.

The Knight, or other officers of this Keep may assign additional tasks as

required. Those tasks and the resultant lessons are to be included in the

Squire's journal.

Upon completion of the full curriculum, the Knight may present his

Squire to any of our three Generals for the final task to be assigned.

Do not present the Squire until you have full faith in his ability to discharge

the duties of a Knight. As their sponsor, any lack of quality on the

Squire's part is reflected upon you directly.
