Gardening on the May Long Weekend

The May long weekend is always questionable weather wise. Sometimes it snows, sometimes it rains and sometimes it is beautiful. People often say you should not plant your garden until after the May long weekend. However, we had a landscaping party on Saturday and fixed up the front of our house. We were lucky that it didn't rain either but it did all day Sunday to breathe life into our freshly planted herbs and flowers.

We expanded the flower bed below our front windows into a wave shape. The brittle corpses of two dead bushes were unrooted and discarded. A rose bush, green spiky bush, and cranberry type of bush took the place of the dead bushes. We planted orange and yellow marigolds around the perimeter and created an herb garden with sage, thyme, dill, oregano, basil, rosemary (that we found growing wild amongst are weeds at the back our four house) and parsley.

We also dug a trench on either side our our sidewalk where we planted yellow Alyssiums, peach and purple violas, an some other spiky colourful flower that I can't remember the name of at the moment. Travelling up our front stairs are black pansies, the Azalea that I received for my birthday from Susan and Brian, purple violas, and cat mint grass.

Our landscaping was a great workout. We moved the sod that we dug up to the back of our house and replaced a few dead patches of our front lawn too. Sod weighs a lot, but it was easier to dig up since the ground was so wet. I can't wait until our fresh herbs are ready to add to our meals.
