Crazy Kit Kats in Japan

Post date: 13-Dec-2009 10:05:17

There are various funky flavours of Kit Kat available in Japan. We saw the following flavours:

    • Green Tea
    • Royal Milk Tea
    • Strawberry
    • Strawberry Cheesecake
    • Soyabean
    • Soyasauce
    • Cookies and Cream
    • Gingerale

I believe there is also a curry Kit Kat because we met people who talked about it, but we never saw it. The Green Tea Kit Kat was my favourite. It's also the only different flavoured Kit Kat that I tried that had the green tea flavouring not only in middle of the wafers, but also in the green and white chocolate outside layer. The Strawberry Kit Kat had the strawberry flavour only in the wafers. The Royal Milk Tea Kit Kat had white chocolate on the outside and the milkly tea flavour in the wafer.

The nastiest flavour we tried was the Soyasauce Kit Kat. It was quite salty, but the sweet white chocolate was a nice compliment to the salty inside. We didn't get a chance to try the other flavours, but if you're ever in Japan, I recommend trying the ginger ale because I'm curious if it would taste fizzy or not.

So, you may ask why all these crazy flavors would be available. In the end it comes down to marketing and competition. In Japan, products sell if "limited edition" is part of the tag line or "only available for a limited time." This is why I couldn't find the curry Kit Kat. It's only available in certain regions and we didn't visit the region where you can buy this flavour. There have been 200 different flavours released. It's an interesting strategy and interesting marketing world. To learn more, check out this story.
