Photo Recreation

Artist Statement:

This photo is of me, and I was inspired by Shiran Neshat. I took this photo in the light room and I took a manniquin hand and covered my mouth with it. I intentionally made the photo dark and shadowy because that's how her's usually are. I made this photo to represent the people that are silenced when they try to speak their opinions. This photo contains the elements/principles of line, because the glasses; shape, because the face has different shapes; color, because I recolored the print myself with watercolors; value, because the black and white part is very full of value; texture, because my hair and the painted spots have textures; and emphasis, because the color emphasizes the parts colored.

I used the composition rules/techniques of rule of thirds, because the colored parts are in the required places; selective color, because there is only a small amount of it; and leading lines, because I feel like the hand draws/leads your eyes to the face. Originally, I was going to write words on in like Shirin Neshat does with her photos, but I felt that that would take away from the color. It took me three tries to get this print.

Like I said before, this photo represents those whos opinions are silenced by others. It relates to my life, because I see on the daily that people make fun of and destroy how others feel. If I could change this image I would make it so the hand wasthe only colored thing in the photo, and it was way more detailed. I wish I also had a different and brigther print, because it was hard to see some detail that I wanted.
