Stars and Stripes

Artist Statement:

The subject of this piece is a newly designed version of the American flag. I used graphite pencil and marker to create this. I created this piece because I liked the idea of the stripes going all sorts of different ways, and the way the star is makes it pop out. In this piece I used the element of line because it is composed of lines, shape because the star and quadrilaterals are shapes, and color because it is composed of the colors red, white and blue. I also used the principles of pattern, because the different lines and colors create pattern, and unity because it is simple and easily composed.

In this piece, I used the composition rule/technique of informal balance, because it isn't techniqually balanced, but seems as it is. When I created this project, I was originally thinking of using acyrilic paint on canvas, but I later decided to use marker on bristol because I thought it would look smoother, and more put together.

When creating this piece, I was assigned to recreate a version of the American flag in my own way, so I used patterns/designs I liked to do so. This project relates to my life, since I live in America. If this piece could be any stronger, I would crisp up the marker more and make it so there are no visable marker strokes.

(Edit): I decided to cut out all white space in my design and glue it to a new piece of paper so it would make the white more sharp and crisp.
