Pure Contour Hands

Artist Statement:

The subject of this creation is two hands held up in a stop motion and the setting is just in the air. To create this piece, I used ink draw the hands and sweater in pure contour, watercolor and to color the sweater, marker to color in the hands and letters that say STOP, and charcoal to color the background. I chose to create this piece, because I wanted to create a piece that incorporated something important to me, and the cause I created this for is something I am really passionate about eliminating. This piece has the elements of shape, because the hands are shapes, and color, because there are some colors, texture, because the charcoal background looks textured. I feel like this piece also contains the principle of emphasis, because the way the hands are bright and in/around the middle.

In this piece, I used the composition rule/technique of rule of thirds, because the palms of the hands fall in those areas. When I first thought of this project, was originally going to do something different in the background, like maybe watercolor of marker. I obviously decided not to. I also was going to freehand the letter S T O and P, but then decided to create a stencil by printed a stop sign out and carving the letters out with an X-acto knife.

This piece represents sexual harassment, and that stop means stop. I wanted to create it in a surreal way, which is why I made the hands into stop signs. If I could revise this piece, I would do something different with the background, because it is sort of plain. I would also fix the bigger hand and make it smaller if that was possible.
