Design & Space

Artist Statement:

These four drawings don't really have subjects, but to create the first three, I used graphite pencil and for the last one I used graphite pencil, Sharpie, and colored pencils. They were all sketches, but for the last one, I used Sharpie to go over it, then I colored the positive space with colored pencils. I chose to create the first one because it was a hand gesture with quite a bit of negative space, which makes it look better. The work was composed of a hand with the negative space around it, and the elements and principles I used were shape for the hand and the rest of the paper for space. The second one I chose to create because, for the different values, I wanted different shapes and patterns so I varied them from box to box. The work is composed of different patterns and values, and the elements/principles I used were line for the outlines and boxes three and six, shape for all boxes, value for all boxes, and pattern and rhythm were both present in all boxes. For the third one I chose to draw a wooden mannequin, and the element I used was shape for the figure I drew. For my fourth piece, I created it by arranging leaves in a certain way on a small piece of paper, and then drawing them bigger on a bigger piece of paper. I chose to create this because the way I arranged the leaves looked the most appealing out of the other ways. The elements/principles I used in the piece were, line and shape for the leaves, color for the positive space and pattern overall.

The composition rule/technique I used in the first piece was silhouette lighting because it is just the negative space that I drew, the positive space is just white. For this piece, I had to erase and revise a lot, because I had a hard time getting it perfect. For the second piece, the composition rule/technique that was present was framing, because I framed my boxes, and separated them from each other, so there's different values in each. I had to revise this piece a lot, because I couldn't quite get the value shades right for some of them. For the third piece, the composition rule/technique I used was silhouette lighting because it's only negative space that I drew, so it looks like a silhouette. For this piece, I had to erase quite a bit because it was hard to get good. For my last piece, the composition rule/technique I used was informal balance because the piece has a sort of "balanced" aspect to it, although it really isn't. For this piece, I revised only a little, because it was sort of simple to copy another thing.

The fourth piece is a drawing of leaves, and it shows my love of nature. It relates to my life because of that. If I could get a chance to redo my third piece, I would because It didn't meet the criteria, and it doesn't look all that great in general.
