Artist Statement:
The subject of this image is a houseplant I have in my kitchen. I used my Canon camera with its flash on to take this photo. I chose to take this photo because when looking at the leaves, I thought they would make a cool abstract look when zoomed in on. I used the elements and principles of line, because the lines all over the leave; shape, because of the different shapes the leaf has on it; color, because the leave is green; value, because there are different shades of value on the leaf; texture, because the leaf is very textured and rough; and pattern, because the different shapes on the leaf seem to create one.
I used the composition rules/techniques of informal balance, because it seems balanced although it isn't; soft focus, because it isn't completly focused; and leading lines, because the lines on the leaf lead around the photo. Originally, I was going to use photos of the plant's flowers, but they weren't that abstract.
This photo relates to my concentration because it is of a leaf, which is natural and a part of nature. If I could change one thing about this photo, it would be be the shadow on the bottom. I would also rid the leaf of impurities.
