Artist Statement:
This sculpture is of a toucan on a branch. I used newspaper and tape to construct an armiture. I then used tape and wrapped it on some wool rope/string that I found, to create it's feet. I used streamers to cover its body and construction paper for it's wings and tail feathers. I also used tissue paper for his beak. I found the stick in my woods and sandpapered it to make it smooth and then put a layer of mod podge on top. I chose to create this project because my concentration is the Rainforest, and I really like toucans because they are really pretty. I used the elements/principles of line, because the stick is a line; shape, because he is a shape; color, because I used many colors to make him pop; texture, because the papers I used gave him texture; space, because he literally takes up space; and emphasis, because his colors emphasize him.
I used the composition rules/techniques of leading lines, because the stick leads the sculpture and informal balance because it isn't completly balanced, but seems like it, in a way. Originally, I wanted to used construction paper on his beak, but I found tissue paper and felt inspired to use it. His feet were very difficult to create.
If this could be stronger, I would mod podge his whole form to make him seem more clean and put together. I wish I would have used a glue stick instead of hot glue to build his beak, because it isn't great at all.
