Social/Political Hand Sculpture

Artist Statement:

The subject of this sculpture is hands holding fruit and vegetables on my base which is the Earth with quotes about world hunger on it. I used an algenent mold and plaster to create the hands, and then I used acrylic paint to paint over it. I then used Sculpy clay to create the food in the hands. I used glaze on top of that too. I used acrylic paint to paint my base as well. I then printed out those quotes to add something else rather than just Earth print on the base. I used the elements/principles of line, because there are lines that make the base, and lines on the hands; shape because the hands and base and everything on them are shapes; color, because almost everything is colored; texture, because the fruit/veggies and hands have rougher feelings; space, because it literally takes up space; and unity, because it is just bam, there, and simply serene.

This piece has the composition rules/techniques of informal balance, because it seems balanced although it isn't perfectly; and framing, because the base kind of frames the hands. Originally, I was going to use global warming as my issue, but changed my mind. It was kind of difficult to shape my hands when they weren't painted, because I was afraid they would break.

This piece represents world hunger, and how it is such an issue in our world. It is a set of hands offering food to those who need it. It relates to my life, because I believe that everyone deserves food no matter what. If I could change one thing about this piece, I would add more quotes because they aren't completely evenly placed.
