Change

Artist Statement:

This photo is of three Robin's eggs in a nest in a tree in my backyard. I took this photo with my phone, because the nest was pretty close to eye level. After developing this photo, I used watercolors to selectively color the eggs. This photo contains the elements and principles of line, because the nest has lines throughout it, and the branches in the back are lines too; shape, because the eggs are shaped and so is the nest; color, because the eggs are colored; value, because there is quite a range of value in it; texture, because the nest is super textured; emphasis, because I think since the eggs are the only colored thing in the photo that they are emphasized; and movement, because I think all the detail in the nest and the swirl-like effect it gives, makes it seem moving.

This photo also contains the composition rules/techniques of silhouette lighting, because some of the sticks and branches are silhouettes; soft focus, because the painted eggs look softly focused; leading lines, because the sticks and branches lead around the photo; grouping, because the eggs are grouped together, and so are the branches making up the nest; and framing, because the nest kind of frames the eggs. Originally, I wasn't going to color the eggs in, but then when I developed the photo I realized that it could use more to it. This photo represents change because it shows that these eggs are going to change soon. Soon they will be baby chicks, and then change into adults and have their own babies that will change.

This photo is one of my favorites I have taken because I really like the detail in it. I also like that I used glossy paper instead of semi matte. It relates to my life because I have since watched these birds hatch and I will continue to watch them change. If I could change something about this piece, I would add more detail to the eggs and make them more higlighted and shadowed.
