Mixed Media Drawing

Artist Statement:

The setting of my drawing is in a pond, at a zoo, and the subject is a duck. To make this piece, I used graphite pencil to sketch a grid, sketch out the basic shapes of my drawing, and shade some parts. I also used charcoal to color the darkest parts of my piece, and ink mixed with water (ink wash) to create the water in the background, eye on the duck, and nostril of the duck. This piece contains some elements and principles, such as shape, since the duck is composed of a couple different shapes, value, since there is many different shades of value, and I also feel there is an emphasis on the duck, since it's the brightest thing in the drawing.

In this piece I also used some composition rules/techniques, being sharp focus, since the photo I drew was very sharply focused. Also, I think I used rule of thirds, since the duck is in one of those places. When creating this piece, I had to use white charcoal to cover up some of the places I accidentally added charcoal. Also I had to erase a lot of lines when sketching the duck, since it was mildly difficult to draw.

This piece is a drawing of a photo that I took when I went to York's Wild Kingdom with my grandmother, brother, and sister. If I could change one thing about this drawing, I would blend the ink wash in the back more, and add ripples in the water.
