Relief Sculpture

Artist Statement:

The subject of this sculpture is a peony I took a picture of at Pineland Gardens. I decided to increase the contrast and make it almost to the point of abstraction. I then printed it and got a piece of illistration board to put what I wanted to do on it. I wanted to take magazines and photos that were in the shades of value of pink that were in the photo to match it up. I attempted to make a 3D piece but I didn't succeed. I ripped the pieces of paper into shapes that matched the flower photo and used glue to adheave them. I was going to layer them up to make it more 3D, but I ran out of time. I chose to create this piece because I liked the color scheme. I used the elements and principles of shape, because the paper pieces were shapes; color, because the whole piece is pink; value, because there are different shades of pink values; texture, because the paper creates a roughish texture; movement, because the paper placement is kind of hectic and seems to move; and pattern, because the paper sometimes seems patterned.

I used the following composition rules/techniques in my piece: Informal balance because it isn't techniqually balanced, but seems like it is slightly balanced to me and grouping, because the paper pieces are all grouped and seem like they are exploding from the middle. I originally wanted to do something else with this project. I wanted to create something similar, but more 3D. I wasn't sure what exaclty, but I would remake this project if I got the chance.

This piece is meaningful because it is of something at one of my favorite places. I love going to Pineland because I have made a lot of good memories there. If I could remake this piece I would layer the paper more or elevate it somehow. I need to make it actually 3D rather than a 2D collage.
