Artist Statement:

This photo is of a pile of paperclips on my desk. I used my Canon Camera with flash to take this photo. I chose to create this image to represent individuality and how you don't always fit in with everyone. I used the elements and principles of line, because the paperclips are all lines; shape, because the stacked paperclips create sifferent shapes; color, because th eone pink paperclip; value, because the other paperclips are a full range of value; space, because I fill basically the whole photo of paperclips; emphasis, because the pink paperclip stands out from the others; movement, because it seems like they were just plopped in front of you; and pattern, because the many paperclips seem like a pattern.

The following composition rules/techniques were used in this photo: rule of thirds, because the pink paperclip is a little bit in two of the spaces for the rule, selective focus, because I did selective color, which made the whole photo focus on that one pink paperclip, and grouping because the paperclips are all grouped together. For this assignment, I really wanted to do something with my backpack being dumped out, but I realized I don't have anything interesting in my bag to make the photo have something different.

This image, as said before, represents individuality. I know that is something portrayed often in art, but I wanted to do something like it. I really like doing selective color photos because the process is fun and the aftermath usually looks good. This project relates to my life because I wish to be more unique than I am, and less in the background like the other paperclips. If I could change something about this photo, it would be the cropping. I would crop it a little more to the side so it matched rule of thirds better.
