My name is Ashley Harris. I was born in Brunswick, Maine on December 29th, 2001. I have one sister, Taylor, and three brothers, Alex, Ben, and Zac. At home, me and my family speak English. At the moment, I don't really have any career goals and all I know is that I am going to college. In five years I see myself in Boston either still in school or finding a career. I have a family friend whom went to college for art, and she is extremely talented. I am most proud of my goals in life. In my free time I enjoy hanging out with my friends, reading, creating art, and listening to music. I chose to take this course because I really liked Photography I, and this class looked like it was a more in-depth/difficult version, which intrigued me. Right now, the photographers that I am most interested in are Shirin Neshat and Sebastião Salgado. My ideal job would be something that involves helping people. Three adjectives others might use to describe me are kind, obnoxious, and cold.
Artistic Inspiration:
Emma-Leone Palmer, Cerulean, 2016, 66 9/10 × 44 9/10 in
I am drawn to this piece because it is beautiful. I like how it's a painting, yet it looks so realistic, almost like a photo. This portrait has really good shadows and highlights that tie it all together. The background is plain, but it works with the woman pictured. You can tell the artist used smooth brush strokes because she looks so real. I think the pop of blue paint on her face makes the whole piece how it is, because it contrasts well with her skin and the background. Her facial expression shows that she is carefree, yet dramatic at the same time. She looks like a strong woman. The name of the painting is Cerulean, which is a shade of blue, the blue in this painting.
Sarah Faust, Winter Window, 2003, 15 in x 15 1/16 in
I was drawn to this photo because I like the color of the woman's coat. I like the mystery of it: What is she doing? What is happening? Why is she outside? I like that the photo looks older and the window and vines kind of give it that look. The woman is pretty as well, and the way she is standing off to the side makes the photo seem put together. I think the green and yellow tones in this photo are nice. I like the lines on the top and bottom from the window, they kind of frame the woman's coat. The roof of the house in the background is like in the perfect middle of those two lines too.
Tracey Baran, First Kill, 1999, 30 in x 40 in
I was drawn to this picture because the white of the cat kind of pops compaired to the other colors in the photo. I think it's cool that the title of the photo makes you look deeper into it too, because at first, I didn't notice the mouse. I like that one of the cat's eyes matches the colors in the background. I really like the sharpness of the image as well; it looks really beautiful.
Kehinde Wiley, Princess Victoire Of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, 2012, 96 in X 72 in
I am drawn to this piece, because the woman's back is turned, and I'm curious to see what she looks like from the front. I really like the leaves and vines in the background. The brush strokes are really smooth and clear in this piece, and I think that adds a lot to it. The fact that the woman is in the center of the piece makes her seem more powerful, I think. Her dress and hair make her even more dramatic and pretty, plus the flowers surrounding her add more.
Aleksandra Fronc, Foxes, 2014, 47 1/5 × 59 1/10 in
I was drawn to this piece because I love foxes, and I think they are really beautiful. I like that the brush strokes in this are choppy and messy because it gives the foxes more texture. The colors of them make this piece bright and intriguing. I think the blues in the background contrast with the orange of the foxes.
Jos Coufreur, Trafalgar Square, London, 2016, 120cm x 170cm
I was really drawn to this piece because it has many colors and is bright. I think it's cool because its just a picture of a city with rainbow. Usually people associate cities with drab and boring colors, so I was happy to see the beauty in this painting. I really like how it is also messy, and kind of gives off the feeling of street art or graffiti.
