Sculpture Four

Artist Statement:

This sculpture is of an Eastern Green Mamba snake. I used newspaper and masking tape to create the armeture, then paint swatches and hot glue to cover that. I chose to create this sculpture because I like snakes and their interesting involvment with negative space. This sculpture has the elements and principles of line, because the paint pieces and linear; shape, because there is a physical shape of the snake; color, because the snake is green in color; texture, because the way the paint swatches are, creates a rough texture; and movement, because the snake looks like it's moving around.

This sculpture has the composition rules/techniques of leading lines, because the snake is a line and it has its scales that have lines that lead around the piece, and grouping, because the scales are all grouped up on his body. Originally, this project was going to be smaller, and I thought about using sculpy to make it, but then thought I should work bigger. I saw the paint swatches out and thought that might be fun. It was very tedious putting on the paint swatches one by one. I originally had a sort of mouth on the front but I ripped it off last minute because I thought it looked weird.

This piece relates to my concentration of Rainforest Animals/plants because it is a species of snake found there. It relates to my life because I like snakes and I think they are interesting and cool animals. If I could change something about this or make it better, I would give it more detailed eyes that are bigger, add more paint swatches to the spots where tape is visable, give the scales more detail with paint pens, and then glaze it with a layer of modpodge. I would also add some sort of base.
