Sculpture Three

Artist Statement:

This is a needle felt I made of a red-eyed tree frog on a leaf. This was my first needle felt, and it was actually quite hard to get the hang of. I used wool and a needle felting needle to create this. The base is construction paper folded to look like a leaf. I chose to create this because it went with my concentration of rainforest animals/things, and I wanted to try needle felting. This piece has the elements and principles of line, because of the base having lines in it; shape, because the frog is made of shapes; color, because there is obviously color; texture, because the frog is wooly textured; and movement, because the frog looks like its on the move.

This piece has the composition rule/technique of soft focus, because it seems very soft and less clear of an animal. Originally I was going to do clay or plaster for this project and also wanted to do something for the animal choice. A student in my class does needle felting all the time, and I was entrigued by the idea of it so I ordered a needle felting kit online and tried it out. I actually really liked it and found it fun. I like that something so soft can turn hard with tiny pokes.

This piece means something to me because it is of a frog, and I really like frogs. I think I'm also going to be making more needle felting things, because I really liked doing that. If I could change one thing about this it would be to make a different base, because the one it has right now is very last minute and not interesting at all. I think I want to do a sculpy one or mod podge a real leaf.
