Slab Assignment

Artist Statement:

This is a cardboard sculpture I made of a pinecone. My inspiration was coming from the pinecones in the trees above my porch, and I thought that cardboard might look quite a bit like what pine cones look like. To create the pinecone, I made small flower like shapes with eight "petals" on each. I used pencil to give each scale detail. I stacked all of the flowers one by one using hot glue to secure them together. It was hard to immitate a pinecone's shape; the cardboard was too thick for the glue to stick well. It also didn't split in half easily, so I was stuck with that thickness.

I kind of wish I persisted with my original idea, because I had a difficult time keeping the flowers even on all sides of this one. It probably would have been nice to have all of the flowers just fastened onto a stick/cone thing. I also always have a hard time using hot glue and the strings make me too mad. I could have made the flowers all proportional, but I chose to just free hand it which I like because they all wouldn't be that similar of scales.
