Artist Statement:
This is a sculpture of a rafflesia flower, which is the largest plant in the world, spanning 3 feet across and weighing 15 pounds. I used clay to create this sculpture. I used red underglaze and then sgraffitoed it to look like the flower. I chose to create this piece because it goes with my rainforest/jungle concentration. This piece contains the elements and principles of line, because the inside has lines scraped into it; shape, because it is in the shape of a flower; color, because it is red; form, because I worked it into the flower form it's in; texture, because the carvings I did created a rough texture; and pattern, because the carvings are patterened.
This piece has the compostion rule/technique of grouping, because the carvings/sgraffito I did were small abstract oval shapes grouped together. Originally, I was going to make a frog with my clay, but changed my mind and decided on this instead, because I liked how unique the flower was.
This project relates to my life, because I really like the flower. I also really like doing sgraffito. If I could change one thing about this, it would be the fact that I broke off a couple of the petals. I would also have smoothed it down before I glazed it.
