A Demon's Curse

For this project, I initially was getting pretty frustrated because I couldn't figure out how to get the light trails to work. It turns out that when I thought my shutter speed was set at 15 seconds long, it was really set for a fifteenth of a second, so it was going SUPER fast! Once I figured out that little fluke, my dad and I started playing outside with flashlights in our front yard as soon as it got dark. We were making cool patterns and spinning around and while those were all SUPER cool, I really wanted to get a set of images that actually represented an idea! So, I decided to play around with the idea of drawing on my dad with a flashlight while he stood there. I drew some wings for him, but when I looked back on the images, I realized that we could only see the light and not any of his facial expressions or body. So, I decided to set my shutter for 30 seconds and took the time to draw out my design on/around him, and then at the end for about 4 seconds I would stand behind the camera and shine the flashlight ON him instead of BEHIND him, so that there would be some light displaying his face once the picture was done being taken! I really, really like the results of this project and it will definitely be a process that I will keep playing around with! My SD card is filled with silly drawings and patterns but I decided on these two because I like the juxtaposition of the angelic pose with the demonic pose, and the different wings / horns / tails / halos I drew around my dad. The picture at the bottom of this page is my dad making his own design with the flashlight!
