Be a Silver Lining
JANUARY 21, 2019
This is my donate life design, for the Donate Life poster competition. I had kind of a hard time coming up with an idea for this poster initially! When making posters/designs for competitions and organizations I like having a really clear theme to work with, and for some reason I was really struggling with coming up with a theme for Donate Life! I knew that it obviously had to do with organ and tissue donation, as the whole requirement of the assignment, but I was stuck on coming up with an idea / slogan to help represent the benefits of organ and tissue donation.
Then, huzzah, I looked outside and saw clouds! I thought it might be a cool idea to have some clouds shaped kind of like organs and tissues (represented here a heart, liver, lungs, kidneys, small bowel, bones/bone marrow, etc). Then I thought of a way to incorporate words, with planes in the sky carrying banners! But, I had no slogan. Then, alas, my mom came up with the GENIUS idea of incorporating silver linings into my work! Because silver linings are the good part of clouds, so by donating your organs, should anything happen to you, you are bringing someone good news and help that is their silver lining.
For this work I decided to use watercolor and ink (because that is quickly becoming my preferred material) because I like how clean, or not clean, I can make work with pen and watercolor. The pen defines the lines and makes them pop out, and the watercolor brings some texture into the piece. I also really like the way light blue watercolor looks on paper, like with the sky and the shading of the white organ clouds.
