Overview
Wrap circles are responsive circles used to resolve conflict or communicate concerns.
Students have the ability to "call" a cirlce at agreed upon times to discuss a concern or conflict
All students have an opportunity to hear and voice their feelings.
Students determine a plan on how to repair harm and proceed with limited adult facilitation
Core Components
Guidelines are taught on circle norms and agreements
Teacher facilitated to start with gradual release to student initiated introduced over time
Asset based conversations not targeting particular students
Time for all parties to express their views
Plan for how to move forward established before circle breaks
Proactive Implementation
Proactively implementing Wrap Circles may look like establishing a classroom environment that utilizes class values, expectations, and circles. Normalizing circles and practicing the structure are vital.
Responsive Implementation
Responsively implementing Wrap Circles may stem from a need to increase student agency and voice within the classroom. The purpose must be discussed with the class as well as practiced.
Connection
If the need is connection then students should be empowered to call their own wrap circles.
Skills Training
If the need is skill building then initiating the wrap circle should be practiced.
Awareness
If the need is awareness then students should discuss how actions have impacted others and the room during the circle.
Emotional Regulation
If the need is regulation then the students may use the wrap circle as a way for everyone to take a break and address dysregulation.
