Overview
Predetermine a time where student can begin assignment outside of direct instructional environment such as end of the day, before school, or at a given time at the end of the block or period.
Core Components
If work is assigned for outside of instruction session, give the opportunity to ensure the work is understand and help is provided as needed.
The work is completed with students as a check for understanding
The goal is to ease the mind and relieve anxiety
Proactive Implementation
Jumpstarting assignments should be built into the end of a subject or day where students can treat the time like a supervised study hall. Students can request help.
Responsive Implementation
If a student, group, or class are struggling with time management or work completion outside of the classroom then introducing time for the students to jumpstart their work may allow for them to manage more of their workload.
Connection
If the need is connection then the jumpstart time can be completed in collaboration.
Skills Training
If the need is skill building then the jumpstart time should focus primarly on the skills that the student needs extra time.
Awareness
If the need is awareness then the jumpstart should allow for students to practice time management and plan for how they use their time.
Emotional Regulation
If the need is regulation then the student should use this time to help reduce anxiety over workload.
