Overview
This technique consists of allowing a student to stop, process, and implement a strategy for regulation
The student is prompted or self advocates to initiate
The student tucks their head and possibly knees up on their chair and into their chest covering their face.
The student practices deep breathing
The student brainstorms possible solutions to responding to the triggering event.
Core Components
Teach the student to use the technique when they need to regulate their emotions and cope
Allow the student to utilize the technique as needed
Provide prompting to the student when they are visibly bubbling.
Student must recognize emotions, tuck themselves into a sitting fetal position, and process the triggering event
The student must combine with processing post use and deep breathes during use.
Proactive Implementation
Proactively implementing the Turtle Technique may look like introducing the technique explicitly to an entire group or class as a means to cope. The skill should be taught and the purpose shared.
Responsive Implementation
Responsively implementing the Turtle Technique may stem from students needing support in coping. Students should be introduced to the turtle technique along with a variety of other coping strategies.
Connection
If the need is connection then students should share feedback with each other on its implementation.
Skills Training
If the need is skill building then students should be allowed time to practice the technique when regulated.
Awareness
If the need is awareness then students should be prompted or signaled to use the technique.
Emotional Regulation
If the need is regulation then the student may incorporate the strategy when they are dysregula
