Proactive Implementation
Proactively using deep pressure is more about creating a well thought out plan of de-escalation with the full team. Deep pressure should be a part of the plan with both family and student aware of the possible use.
Responsive Implementation
Responsively implementing deep pressure should be derived from the escalation plan and be verbalized to the student with multiple adults present.
Connection
If the need is connection then the student may seek to have a preferred adult present during escalation to process through.
Skills Training
If the need is skill building then the student may be given controlled choices during the implementation of deep pressure.
Awareness
If the need is awareness then the supervising adult may calmly use a neutral tone to work with the student on recognizing how their body is feeling and support with grounding.
Emotional Regulation
If the need is regulation then the student may be asked to repeat a mantra, take deep breathes, or complete another de-escalation protocol.
