Using 2X10....
Gives an easy structure for individual relationship building
Provides individualized attention
Creates opportunity for increasing and understanding student motivations
Overview
The 2 X 10 rule is a tool for a teacher to foster a relationship with difficult students
A teacher will make the time for a 2 min personal conversation each day for 10 consecutive days to have a meaningful conversation with the student that does NOT relate to academics or behaviors.
It is meant to find common interests with students and start to develop a trusting relationship.
This must be one on one time and done privately
It is suggested that a time is mutually agreed upon.
Lunch or recess time is discouraged as the student most likely needs to foster peer relationships as well.
This occurs over the course of 10 days.
t on a personal subject. Focus completely on building personal rapport.
Core Components
Must occur twice daily with 10 min intervals
Must be 1:1 and uninterrupted
Must be high interest and non academic or performance based
Proactive Implementation
Based on connection with previous teachers and historical data, a teacher may determine the 2x10 strategy is necessary to implement at the start of a year or semester. The teacher may initiate the process from day one to strengthen relationships from the start. This can actually be completed in steps to reach entire classes.
Responsive Implementation
If a student's relationship is starting to fracture with a particular adult then 2x10 may be a solution. The supervising adult should seek support via coverage to consistent find time to meet and build/strengthen the relationship with the student.
Connection
If the need is connection then the target adult should carve out the time to work with the specific student and hold that time sacred.
Skills Training
If the need is skill building then the student may select target areas via morning and end of the day conferencing. This should not be discussed during 2x10 time but instead be added time with the particular adult.
Awareness
If the need is awareness then the student may discuss with a 2nd adult the interactions of the day in a debrief or conference. This should never be done during the 2x10 time.
Emotional Regulation
If the need is regulation then the 2x10 time should be scheduled based on the most challenging part of the day for the student. This may mean completing it just before, in the middle, or immediately following this time.
