Overview
Positive affirmations can be used as a response to student need or taught as a coping strategy.
Positive affirmations are writing or verbally saying positive things in your life.
They may include people, events, or anything that brings positivity.
Reminding and shifting your attention to the good opposed to fixating on the negative experience.
Core Components
Affirmations must be said aloud (whisper talk)
Affirmations must be practiced
Adults must process the use of affirmations and possibly prompt the student to use
Proactive Implementation
Proactively implementing Positive Affirmations may look like providing students the science behind self affirmation, a set of affirmations, and time to practice the affirmations.
Responsive Implementation
Responsively implementing Positive Affirmations may result from a high level of negative self talk from a student, group, or class. The why behind the affirmations should be explicitly taught to students.
Connection
If the need is connection then the student should also receive positive affirmations from trusted peers and adults.
Skills Training
If the need is skill building then the student should practice giving themselves positive affirmations during specific times.
Awareness
If the need is awareness then the student should be prompted or signaled to give an affirmation when they are visibly bubbling.
Emotional Regulation
If the need is regulation then the student should use the positive affirmations as a coping/regulation strategy.
