Overview
Sentence Stems are used in peer to peer conflict resolution.
A set of sentence starters or prompts are given to all participants to help guide the conversation.
The conference or mediation is supervised with a physical copy of the sentence stems provided.
The students take turns using the sentence stems in the conversation as needed.
The facilitation of the conversation should be guided on how to repair harm done to each other and actions steps to move forward.
Core Components
The students should be taught the stems prior to conflict
Conflict conferencing with the stems should be practiced before conflict
The stems should be physically displayed or provided to all parties.
Conversations should be facilitated by adult.
Proactive Implementation
Proactively implementing sentence stems may look like providing them to students at each task or situation. Students may practice or rely on the stems to guide their thinking/processing.
Responsive Implementation
Responsively implementing sentence stems may stem from students needing added support or guidance when completing a particular challenging situation. This could be academically, socially, or behaviorally.
Connection
If the need is connection then stems may be used during conflict resolution to help guide the processing.
Skills Training
If the need is skill building then stems may be provided during new material or during the practicing of a particularly challenging skill.
Awareness
If the need is awareness then the stems may be written to ask others for the impact on them to further seek their view.
Emotional Regulation
If the need is regulation then the student may use the stem to communicate or request a break.
